What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

VINTAGE 2006 marks the inaugural vintage of our J. Lohr's Fog's Reach Vineyard Pinot Noir. Grown on cobbly, sandy loam soils of the cool, windy Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey, Pinot seems to thrive, producing tiny, deeply colored and flavorful clusters. Comprised of Dijon clones 115, 667, 777 and Pommard 4 grown on two different rootstocks, the Pinot Noir grapes were hand harvested, destemmed and sorted into six or twelve ton open top fermentation tanks in our newly created small lot winery in Paso Robles. The grapes were cold soaked for an average of five days prior to warming read more...

J Lohr originally planted pinot noir in the 70's, but ripped them out after 5 years. Apparently they were old clones and back then no one really knew how to grow pinot too well.

In 2002 they replanted 4 dijon clones on 2 rootstocks giving 8 different combinations. This is their first release of this wine, so i was excited to taste it.

Yields were 3 tons per acre, and they did an early morning harvest, the grapes were indoors by 10am, and then they did individual berry (rather than whole cluster) sorting.

The wine opens with a slightly hot nose, but its very fruity read more...

WE 92pts. - According to the Wine Enthusiast: A lovely, succulent Pinot, whose direct fruity richness makes it immediately enjoyable. Braced with adequate Monterey acids, it has deep flavors of red and black currants, anise, cola and smoky, oaky vanilla. This is an inaugural wine from J. Lohr, and a very promising one. Winemaker Notes - 2006 marks the first vintage of the Fog's Reach Vineyard Pinot Noir, which resulted in the production of 2,750 cases. The fog helps cool the grapes, which are planted in the sandy loam soil of the windy region. Dark red and purple-hued, the Pinot Noir exhibits read more...
