J Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay Case of 6 Bottles 2013
This expressive Riverstone Chardonnay has light golden hues with a tint of youthful green. Aromas of ripe comice pear, melon, meyer lemon and brioche coalesce with notes of roasted hazelnut, flint, spice and toasty oak. Flavors of pom fruits, mineral and sabayon end with a lingering toasty oak finish. Barrel fermentation with sur-lie aging adds layers of creamy palate weight, depth and aromatic complexity. The Arroyo Seco's cool climate and long growing season help maintain a natural acidity that brings this wine's rich palate into balance. Food Pairings: Tangerine-roasted chicken, frisée salad with lardons and poached egg, smoked salmon, vegetable frittatas, pan roasted pheasant with creamy polenta.
The 2013 Riverstone is quite underwhelming. Very little fruit is to be found, the nose is mostly oak, dilute tasting. Good acid though. Years ago, J. Lohr had some really nice Riverstone Chards. Something has changed here. My rating-- 72.

The aromas are of nectarine, peach pie and apple--combined with the perfumed vanilla and toasted oak bouquet from barrel and malolactic fermentation and sur lie aging--creating an elegant Chardonnay from Monterey's Arroyo Seco AVA. The flavors are very clean, with peach, nectarine and citrus with subtle butter and vanilla toastiness, producing layers of complexity with an excellent balance of fresh fruit acidity and palate weight.
This elegant Chardonnay has an attractive pale strawyellow color. The aromas are of pear, apple and stone fruits, combined with a perfumed roasted hazelnut and butterscotch bouquet from the barrel fermentation and sur lie aging. The flavors are very soft with ripe pear, tangelo citrus and vanilla toastiness, producing layers of complexity with a silky balance of fresh fruit acidity and palate-weight. - Jeff Meier, winemaker
