J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot has a mature red color with a raspberry hue. Black cherry and pomegranate aromas are accentuated by the high fraction of Malbec in this year’s blend. The toasty oak signature is reminiscent of hazelnut and dark chocolate. This soft red wine has a fine texture on the palate and finishes with a bright Rainier cherry fruit signature. This wine is an ideal pairing for seafood bisque or filet with wild mushrooms.

Founded in 1972, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines crafts an array of acclaimed wines from estate vineyards in Monterey County, Paso Robles and Napa Valley. From this world-class palette of fruit, J. Lohr produces three tiers of award-winning wines – J. Lohr Estates, J. Lohr Vineyard Series and J. Lohr Cuvée Series. Selecting Monterey County’s Arroyo Seco appellation for his original vineyard, Jerry planted his first 280 acres of grapes beginning in 1972. Ideally suited for cool-climate winegrowing, these vineyards have become an acclaimed source for outstanding Chardonnay, Riesling, Valdiguié and Pinot Noir. At the heart of J. Lohr’s renowned red wine program are its 2,000 acres of estate vineyards in Paso Robles. Featuring warm, sunny days, cool nights and diverse soils, these vineyards have proven ideal for cultivating a flavorful array of grapes including voluptuous and complex Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc along with Syrah and Zinfandel. Chocolate, herb and carob come together on the nose with lightly beefy base notes and plenty of spicy top notes. Soft and a bit plump in the mouth, this is slightly creamy with bright red cherry fruit saturating the palate. There’s a nice layer of wood spice floating under the fruit, with a vanilla cream accent popping on the back end. The back end shows a touch of sweetness balanced by the emerging drying notes of the wood tannin, lending this a bit of a creme caramel and raspberry finale. 86pts

A very sweet and fruitful merlot. Reminds me of some pinot noirs.
