J Hofstatter Pinot Nero Meczan 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Floral with stemmy base notes then smoky with a hint of honey, some earthiness and a nice gentle sandlewood accent over lightly burnished red cherry fruit. On entry this is supple, elegant and brightly fruited with a bit of stemmy wood sticking out a bit. The finish is long and elegant with bright acids adding cut to the burnished raspberry fruit and this picks up some spice on the backend. Sappy and deep with a penetrating, extract rich intensity on the backend and the finish, this is very young and warrants cellaring for another few years or decanting for several hours. 93pts

Taking stock of the past ten years I can confidently assert that the exceptional character of our local vineyards and grape varieties is reflected in our wines more than ever. South Tyrol’s best-known vines are cultivated in the Hofstätter wine estate. We even enjoy the unique privilege of owning vineyards in the finest sites on both sides of the Adige River in southern South Tyrol. However, it is precisely the work in the vineyards which I find the most challenging: decades of monoculture have exhausted the soils, sapped them of their vigour, the vigour which the grapevine needs to stay healthy and unfold its vitality to the full. And today the vine needs vital force more than ever before to withstand the increasingly extreme weather conditions. The word ‘terroir’ is often bandied about, as if it referred to an established factor, while in reality it is subject to the very same fluctuations that the far-sighted winegrower is confronted with in his daily work. He needs to recognise the elementary preconditions necessary for vines to yield superlative, distinctive, unmistakable wines, cultivating, fine-tuning and focusing his methods. This is the only way to enhance the quality of grapes in a vineyard which has always produced excellent fruit. I am striving to attain this without advance knowledge of the extent to which the world-wide ecological challenges are to be surmounted in a small organism such as a vineyard. I am confident that a workable solution will be found! Read less

Subtly sweet on the nose with hints of pine nuts, bergamot tea, dried mushroom and lichen covered rocks topped with some fine sage, smoke and maduro tobacco notes. elegant and tense in the mouth, there are some fine tannins here keeping this firm on the palate which delivers lovely layered black tea, dried cranberry, and softly toasty oak spice. The back end shows more of a mineral bent with the tannins showing a touch of angularity before leading to the precise tart red fruited finish which is a little spicy, gently earthy and attractive long, ending with a sweet/earthy burst of carob tinged rooibos tea like flavor. Complex, refined and elegant, the earthiness here will not be to everyone’s liking but this is a lovely wine. 92pts

Lightly smoky on the nose and gently oaky with a backdrop of gently leafy tones to the sweet red currant fruit. On the palate this exhibits a firm bed of fine grained tannins. The mouthfeel is a bit lean and quite focused with mineral and soil driven flavors that lead to a slightly meaty, cherry skin finish. This is a bit small and quite jewel like in the mouth, deserving of some simple food. 91pts

The nose showed under ripe peach, hints of citrus and spring floral notes. On the palate, it was fresh and vibrant with a hint of sweetness and flavors of green apple, sweet spice and inner floral notes. The refreshing finish had a spritz of citrus and remained enjoyable throughout.

Intense ruby-red color, medium-high consistency, fruity aromas which struck your nose with a good complexity and endurance. Nice tasting: very harmonious, balanced, with a good body and persistence.

Tasted vintage 2001 (in Summer 2008). One of the best Italian Gewurtztraminers. Very well structured. Luscious palate; dense and long. Still has a little bit of acidity that makes it very drinkable. Age at least six years.

Dichtes Rubinrot.

A lively ruby red color. It has exuberant and fresharomas reminiscent of woodland berry fruits and cherry forming a harmonious bouquet, rich and elegant on the palate. It is well-balanced, medium bodied with rich flavors and a lasting finish.

The color is a translucent crimson/ruby. Elegant but concentrated palate, lightish body. Corrupt cherries, a touch of wood. This wine is a total winner and would basically go with anything, but would be best with a rustic, northern italian dish.

Helles Rubin, granatfarbene Reflexe.
