J. Hofstatter Alto Adige Pinot Grigio 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight on the nose and more floral and mineral than fruity though at its core there is something jammy and pithy that reminds me of bitter orange marmalade. Bright and vivid on entry, the palate reflects the nose in that this is very mineral driven and not a particularly fruity wine. Small scaled and very precise in the mouth this is focused like a laser through the long, minerally finish that shows some baking apple fruit. 87pts

Taking stock of the past ten years I can confidently assert that the exceptional character of our local vineyards and grape varieties is reflected in our wines more than ever. South Tyrol’s best-known vines are cultivated in the Hofstätter wine estate. We even enjoy the unique privilege of owning vineyards in the finest sites on both sides of the Adige River in southern South Tyrol. However, it is precisely the work in the vineyards which I find the most challenging: decades of monoculture have exhausted the soils, sapped them of their vigour, the vigour which the grapevine needs to stay healthy and unfold its vitality to the full. And today the vine needs vital force more than ever before to withstand the increasingly extreme weather conditions. The word ‘terroir’ is often bandied about, as if it referred to an established factor, while in reality it is subject to the very same fluctuations that the far-sighted winegrower is confronted with in his daily work. He needs to recognise the elementary preconditions necessary for vines to yield superlative, distinctive, unmistakable wines, cultivating, fine-tuning and focusing his methods. This is the only way to enhance the quality of grapes in a vineyard which has always produced excellent fruit. I am striving to attain this without advance knowledge of the extent to which the world-wide ecological challenges are to be surmounted in a small organism such as a vineyard. I am confident that a workable solution will be found! Read less

Light and slightly peachy on the nose with a sweet apple underlay and nice hints of river stones. A touch sweetly fruited on entry with creamy, fairly apple core of fruit. A bit simple, if fresh, and easy to drink. 86pts

The Alto Adige in Northern Italy is a superb cool climate region for producing expressive white wines. The Hofstatter estate is comprised of family-owned vineyards on the hillsides of the Adige Valley. The very finest wines come from sloping and steep vineyards. Steep vineyards expose the vines to more sunlight, rainwater drains away quickly and the "guyot" trellising method, which restricts the yield per vine, results in finer quality. For this wine the grapes are hand [icked on the east- to west-facing hillsides. They are lightly pressed and the must is clarified using natural sedimentation, after which it is fermented at cool temperatures. This wine is a classic and very expressive Pinot Grigio, bright straw yellow in color with an attractive aroma of citrus fruits, peach, honeydew melon and pear; medium rich, fruity, well-structured and direct on the palate with orchard fruit flavors and tangy, fruity acidity on the finish.

Wine Tasting NotesThis is a very typical Italian style Pinot Grigio, being full, bright yellow in color with coppery reflexes and with a clear fruit aroma of pear, warm with light spice, firm on the palate, velvety and full-flavored with wellintegrated acidity. A very round and satisfying wine.
