J Cuvée Xb NV

Winemaker's Notes:

All grapes at J are hand-harvested into small quarter-ton bins and placed as whole clusters, without destemming, into our special Coquard press for a gentle pressing cycle. Grape juice from the various vineyard lots is fermented and kept separately until blending decisions are made in mid-November. The cuvée (blend) was assembled and cold stabilized to remove excess tartrates and then bottled in the spring. The cuvée included 25% oak cask aged non-vintage wines that were carefully selected for this blend.

KARMÈRE VINEYARDS AND WINERY OF SHENANDOAH VALLEY is a result of five generations of farming and a love of the land and rural life. Marilyn K Hoopes, co-founder of Karmère, grew up in Teton Valley, Idaho on a potato farm on the Teton river in full view of the Grand Tetons. In l978, at age twenty-six, she moved to Amador County and fell in love with the bucolic Shenandoah Valley. She also fell in love with Todd Pickens who had recently moved from the Bay area and prior from L.A. to Amador County to become a "back to the lander." They made their home in Jackson, California and in l990 bought their first piece of property in Shenandoah Valley: a seventeen acre parcel adjacent to Terre Rouge. This is their home place. In l994, they completed an IRS 1031 real property trade and obtained the eighty-nine acre Jameson Ranch where the winery and tasting facility now exists. The name "Karmère" (car-mare) is in honor of Marilyn's mother Karma Hoopes: "mère" is the French word for mother. Since the land exchanged came from Marilyn's parent's estate and the existing farm in Idaho bears her father's name, Marilyn decided to honor her mother's hard work and vision and thus the name was created. Marilyn, an attorney, and Todd, an optometrist, are the parents of three grown children, Josh, Jared, and Hayley. All of the children are involved in the winery or vineyards. Todd continues to practice optometry and Marilyn works as a part-time Administrative Law Judge devoting the majority of her time to the winery and vineyards. The first Zinfandel vines were planted in l994. Plantings of zin, syrah, barbera, viognier, primitivo and nebbiolo have continued with sixty-seven acres planted of the hundred and five total. New offering Two to three years, 4gr Dusty, steely, firm nose shows hints of toast, chalk, dried pear and dried flowers. Wonderfully tense, and snappy in the mouth this offers up mineral driven flavors laced with hints of dried herbs, polleny flowers and gorgeous yeasty notes that support a core of dried apple and pear fruit. gentle and delicate in the mouth with a finish that is clear and tense with dry white fruit and a little lemon curd accent. Wonderfully pure and focused. 92pts

Gracefully opens up with crisp lemon peel, honeysuckle and delicate yeast aromas. Upon entry, these notes are followed by a mix of Fuji apple, grapefruit and a sweet hint of angel food cake. The acidity adds just enough liveliness and the citrus zest leads to a lingering, warm pear and lush finish.

Shows depth and maturity, yet this is still fresh and lively. Aromas of baked apple, hazelnut and yeast lead to layered apple cider and spicy toast flavors. Drink now.

The non-vintage J Cuvee 20 Brut gracefully opens up with crisp lemon peel, honeysuckle and delicate yeast aromas. Upon entry, these notes are followed by a mix of Fuji apple, grapefruit and a sweet hint of angel food cake. The mid-palate is interlaced with toast, caramel and almond flavors. The acidity adds just enough liveliness and the citrus zest leads to a lingering, warm pear and lush finish. This wine pairs beautifully with a Kumamoto oyster topped with Tsar Nicoulai Caviar in a J Cuvee 20 mignonette.

Closure: Cork

Notes: After the secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle, the wines aged for more than three years in our cool cellar. The wines were carefully riddled to remove the yeast sediment responsible for the aging character. Following disgorging, a dosage liqueur of reserve wine and pure cane sugar was added to balance the wine. An additional six months of aging on the cork before release ensured a perfect balance of flavors.
