J. Bouchon Carménère Valle del Maule Reserva Especial 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark fruit, lots of cocoa, a bit feral, earthy, nice herbal spice but no green to speak of. Sweetness from oak, vanilla. A bit sweet on entry with a big carob note followed by a touch of herb, beefy flavors, caramel. This is big and a bit lazy. 85pts

J. Bouchon:
A winery without a past is like a wine without character. At J. Bouchon, above all else, we believe in tradition and quality. Our history goes a long way back - to 1892 - when Emile Bouchon, a native from Bordeaux (France) arrived in Chile and settled down in the Maule Valley, south of Santiago. Julio Bouchon S., the current president and owner, is an Agronomist that graduated at the University of Chile and holds an Enologist degree from the University of Bordeaux.

The color shows the early stages of evolution, with a slightly orange fringe. The background is a frank carmine. The nose is not so sweet compared to Carmenère syrupy. Instead of pepper on the vigor that one would expect from a Cabernet. Not unpleasant (blackcurrant, more leaf than fruit, red currant). On the palate, slightly tannic attack (softer than the nose). The same tannins (from the cob or glitch?), welcomed. The body is not exuberant, no rise of heat or alcohol. The finish is correct, without dryness. It took the back to find a little cocoa, again without caricature. Tasting date: 23 October 2010 Maturity: Drink now Reviews of maturity: I do not think the greenness leave room for more flavors built. So now enjoy the freshness it provides.
