Fresh cherry fruit on the nose is well balanced by vanilla and oak spice notes as well as a hint of pink peppercorn and lingonberry fruit. There are nice suggestions of tar, mint and a little rust. Perhaps a touch soft in the mouth and decidedly fruity, this has a lovely core of wiry tannins and a nice, almost medicinal edge to the transparent mid-palate. There is a huge rush of raspberry liqueur fruit on the long finish with nice, gentle suggestions of spices on the finale and a return of raspberry fruit. This is modern but shows its fruit very well. 90pts

The Anton family founded Izadi in 1987 after years of running vineyards in Villabuena de Alaba.
Dunkles Rubinrot. In der Nase Aromen von roter Frucht. Am Gaumen leichte Mineralität mit feinen Tanninen. Ein subtiler, fruchtiger Wein und einem intensiven, vollmundigen Finale.
Pflaumen- und Kirscharomen sowie eine saftige Säure bilden das Grundgerüst dieses schon trinkreifen Weines.
The 2001 Seleccion (a cuvee made only in exceptional vintages) raises the bar considerably. It is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Graciano from vines averaging 50+ years of age. The wine is fermented in barrel, aged for 18 months in new French oak, and bottled unfiltered. Dark ruby-colored, it possesses a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, smoky black fruits, and licorice. This is followed by a medium-bodied, elegantly styled wine with excellent definition and focus, ripe fruit and a pure, lengthy finish. There is still tannin to resolve so give this wine 2-3 more years of bottle age and drink it over the following 10 years.
