Iron Horse Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir Green Valley 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

By nose: Strawberry and raspberry. By mouth: rich and full bodied with intense raspberry fruit. Our Rosé of Pinot Noir has ample body and structure to enable it to pair wonderfully with a range of dishes. On the lighter side - watermelon, feta & basil salad or bay scallop cevice with fresh avocado. Or go for bolder flavors such as grilled oregano chicken skewers with lemon aioli or a rack of sweet and mildly spicy barbequed ribs.

Drive past the berry farms on Ross Station Road, past the point where you can’t imagine there’s anything at the end of the road, crest the knoll and be awestruck as the view opens up to 350 acres covered with grape vines. Continue down the hill, across a small bridge, past the vegetable gardens, up a winding oak lined drive, between a row of alternating palm and olive trees and finally to the charming Iron Horse Winery, where you will enjoy a stunning view all the way across Sonoma County to Mt. St. Helena. The winery is best known for its Sparkling Wines. The Obama Adminstration is the fifth consecutive presidental administration to serve Iron Horse at the White House, a tradition that began in 1985 with the historic U.S.-Russian Summit Meetings ending the Cold War. The Chardonnay is cool climate perfection. Pinot Noir is the winery’s rising star wine. Read less

Baked cherry, earth, and herbs. Good acidity and a long finish.

Flavors and aromas of strawberry and cherry. Definitely fruit forward, with light acidity and body.

Very young, brilliant - fruit forward, almost tart with notes of red cherries, strawberries/raspberries, and a very soft lemongrass undertone. Wonderful, complex bouquet. Thin and light on the palate, however, w/ not much complexity (yet)...usually would have let it sit another few years (at the least), but we were entertaining very "light palated" company.

Great depth of character, profound flavors and yet the weight and texture is still so light and silky it glides across the palate.

A nice wine with lots of dark fruit and spice, hints of rose petal, cherry and strawberry...rich flavors of chocolate. Wonderful, lingering finish.

By nose: Black currant, cola and wild mushrooms. By mouth: Ripe plum, blueberryjam, gentle entry on the palate and a lingering pleasant finish. Match with stews, mushrooms, roasted chicken, roastedpheasant, roasted duck, roasted quail, rabbit any way and soft ripe cheese. Great with a properly prepared omelette.

Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 92Right up there with the wonderful '05, Iron Horse's '06 shows the brisk acids and long hangtime flavors the wine is known for. The cherry, currant, licorice, root beer and Provenal herb flavors are rich and savory, leading to a complex finish.Wine & Spirits ReviewRated 91The work of the new vineyard team at Iron Horse is beginning to show in its Pinot Noir, if this rich and satisfying 2006 is any indication. Careful growing and selection are evident in the vigor of the wine, its dark fruit edging toward a resinous ripeness, with a structure that keeps it firm and savory. Decant is for roast salmon finished with red wine and mushrooms.Wine Tasting NotesThe most distinctive character of Iron Horse Pinot Noir is that it goes beyond the bright fruit character typical of the Russian River area, showing deeper, more earthy flavors that are special to Green Valley. This is a very expressive, stylish, elegant wine. It has extraordinary depth of flavor.
