Innocent Bystander Syrah 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

*Recommended in Matthew Jukes' 100 Best Australian Wines 2015/16* Innocent Bystander is a Yarra Valley based winery producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir alongside several emerging varietals including Pinot Gris, Moscato, Sangiovese & cool climate grown Syrah. The label first came about when the Giant Steps team decided to produce wines from the many brilliant vineyards they came across in the Yarra Valley and beyond. These are approachable, drinkable wines that deliver abundant fruit flavour - our winemakers like to think of them as “a bloody good drink!” Australia is famous for its big, sweet and jammy shiraz. This is not one of those. This is a style that is aromatic, elegantly structured and relaxed. Orange zest and red summer berry perfumes mingle with a lovely note of black pepper. On the palate, dusty tannins complement flavours of wild blackberries and raspberries. A very earthy and spicy wine with a long, savoury finish. This wine is juicy and bright with medium weight and good balance. This wine lends itself very well to food. Baked red peppers stuffed with wild rice and mushrooms would be lovely. Panzanella salad. Baked standing rib of beef and bernaise. Beaufort cheese. Char grilled lamb cutlets with roasted garlic and rosemary.

An experienced vigneron counting over 20 years in the Australian wine industry, Phil Sexton relocated from the warm, coastal region of Margaret River to the gravelly slopes of Victoria’s Yarra Valley in the late 1990s to pursue cool climate viticulture. Beyond the pristine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir he was able to produce in the Valley, Phil discovered a number of vineyards in far flung corners of Victoria that inspired him to explore regional diversity in this small state. Thus the Innocent Bystander label was created, and his talented winemaking team tasked with delivering a range of wines with a personality all their own: distinctly regional, varietally expressive and definitely not your run of the mill blends.
