Innocent Bystander Pinot Gris Yarra Valley 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 season, with long warm summer days and cool nights, produced fruit with ideal ripeness and sugar balance. The majority of fruit was harvested in the upper Yarra Valley where cool summer temperatures lead to fresh crunchy acidity and great aromatics. It was a very quick vintage but due to the high altitude vineyard locations the pinot gris was harvested after the early chardonnay fruit. This wine has a crunchy texture with zingy, racy acidity, lime zest, Granny Smith apples, fresh celery hearts, crushed Kaffir lime leaves, honeydew and finishes with cold slate and minerals. Enjoy this with sushi, sashimi, freshly shucked oysters, chicken salad, tomato and fresh goat’s curd bruchetta.

An experienced vigneron counting over 20 years in the Australian wine industry, Phil Sexton relocated from the warm, coastal region of Margaret River to the gravelly slopes of Victoria’s Yarra Valley in the late 1990s to pursue cool climate viticulture. Beyond the pristine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir he was able to produce in the Valley, Phil discovered a number of vineyards in far flung corners of Victoria that inspired him to explore regional diversity in this small state. Thus the Innocent Bystander label was created, and his talented winemaking team tasked with delivering a range of wines with a personality all their own: distinctly regional, varietally expressive and definitely not your run of the mill blends.
