Innocent Bystander Chardonnay Yarra Valley 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

This is what the Yarra Valley was created for: making great Chardonnay. Alpine influences and flinty soils make for taut, elegant, finessed wines. But, at Innocent Bystander, they like their Chardonnay restrained, structured, citrus-y and refreshing (definitely not one for the toasty, oak, butter and honey brigade).

An experienced vigneron counting over 20 years in the Australian wine industry, Phil Sexton relocated from the warm, coastal region of Margaret River to the gravelly slopes of Victoria’s Yarra Valley in the late 1990s to pursue cool climate viticulture. Beyond the pristine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir he was able to produce in the Valley, Phil discovered a number of vineyards in far flung corners of Victoria that inspired him to explore regional diversity in this small state. Thus the Innocent Bystander label was created, and his talented winemaking team tasked with delivering a range of wines with a personality all their own: distinctly regional, varietally expressive and definitely not your run of the mill blends. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ReviewGreen-gold. Nutty, broad and sweet-smelling, with notes of fresh melon, papaya and yellow plum. A dense, solid wine, with spicy orchard and tropical fruit flavors that verge on the exotic. Retains focus and energy on the finish, though, picking up a mineral accent as well as a hint of lemon. Complex stuff for the money.Wine Tasting NotesNutty with perfumes of fresh nectarines, vanilla beans, white peaches, and hints of citrus. Soft, juicy and balanced. Expresses lemon, cinnamon, apple and lime characteristics with a crisp, citrus finish.
