What to Expect

Charbono is a little-planted, little-known grape in California, yet it has an almost cult following. A clone of the Charbonneau grape found in France's Savoie region, Charbono produces an earthy, plummy and slightly rustic wine with plenty of acid and tannins, concealed by a friendly richness of fruit. The grape is called Bonarda in Argentina.

Pungent and earthy with a deep cedary, decaying wood tone, big woodear mushrooms and slight black pepper and roast beef notes and over an oily, garage tone. A touch of VA to boot, Cleans up with some faint red fruits and bricky dust. It's actually engaging to smell. Complex if atypical gaining a touch of fudge and cigar ash with a bloody background note. . A very interesting pungent aroma. Got my attention right away. Flavor is very mellow and complex - even a little watery and light. Might be a little too refined for my palate, although I appreciate the complexity. Enjoyed the nose more than the flavor.

Interestingly it smells quite like a Barolo : tar and lilacs. Its an old wine, but holds up well. Lots of acetone, licorice and a slight fungal nature. Pretty funky.

Lots of interesting smells include motor oil and burnt rubber, very low-alcohol smooth mouth with a sharp acidity.

Some heat on the nose despite its age. There's a lot of tar, deep black fruits, leather and some heavy tannins.
