Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

96 points Ian D'Agata (International Wine Cellar): 2001 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva I Paganelli (14.9% alcohol; 5.93 g/l total acidity, 32.1 g/l dry extract): Deep red-ruby. Captivating aromas of redcurrant, violet and marzipan complicated by balsamic and woodsy notes. Very dense but also vibrant and juicy, featuring nicely focused, rich flavors of raspberry, strawberry and licorice. Solid harmonious acidity gives a refreshing quality and impeccable balance to what is essentially a big, broad wine. The complex, very persistent finish shows very silky tannins. One of the best Brunellos of all in 2001, a truly great year for these wines that was characterized by greatly reduced yields due to a late spring frost followed by near-ideal growing conditions thereafter. (May 2011)

Blackberries, violets and charred wood. Solid core of big lean fruit with lanolin and a bit of caramel. On the palate, silky texture with blackberry and black cherry skins and a nice bite of acid. Fine tannins. There is a subtle richness, but no suggestion of over-ripeness. Big and elegant at the same time. Loads of life remaining.

Loads of blackberry, licorice and toasty oak on the nose. Full-bodied, round and rich, with wonderful fruit, light vanilla character and a long finish. Excellent, with lots of everything. Wine Spectator. A Sangiovese Grosso wine from Tuscany in Italy. 2001 Il Poggione (Roberto Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 750ml
