Il Carbonaione. Podere Poggio Scalette 2011
"Inky ruby. A perfumed violet nuance complicates dark plum and blueberry syrup on the enticing nose, with red fruit notes emerging with aeration. Dense, rich and suave, with harmonious acidity providing clarity and cut to the very deep red berry and cocoa flavors. Finishes pure and very long, with silky tannins. This develops more of a red berry profile with aeration. An outstanding wine, but I would have scored it even higher had it reminded me more of sangiovese." *-Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (91 Points)*
Three and a half glasses
Opened, decanted, and poured. A moderate amount of sediment in the bottle. Dense black cherry aromas (ripe but not sweet) on the nose, with grilled meats, toast (a little butter too?), and charred wood. The grilled meat character really came out with time in the glass. Smooth texture and medium weight on the palate, with black cherry skins, blackberry, violets and shale. Improved steadily over two hours drinkIng, and was going strong on the last sip. Great structure and balance, with the impression of being built for the long haul.
External Reviews for Il Carbonaione. Podere Poggio Scalette
Inky in color this new wave red boasts black currant blackberry violet and light spice flavors. Polished and thickly textured with a pleasantly bitter finish of sweet fruit. Sangiovese. Best from 2014 through 2022. BS Wine Spectator.
The 2009 Il Carbonaione has elegance to burn. Polished silky tannins frame layers of fruit as this harmonious totally finessed wine blossoms in the glass. The 2009 is simply glorious from the very first taste. A kick of Sangiovese acidity gives the wine its lift and vibrancy on the finish. This is a great showing. Carbonaione is 100% Sangiovese (Lamole clone) grown on the hillsides of Greve. The wine spent 15 months in 350-liter oak barrels 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029. 94+ --- AG

An extracted style, dark and jammy, showing blackberry, plum and oak spice flavors. This is fresh and impressive for its concentration, if a bit rigid on the finish now. Be patient. Sangiovese. Best from 2014 through 2024.
A gorgeous Sangiovese, with blueberry, raspberry and floral notes. Full-bodied, with super velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Wine Spectator, James Suckling
The 2008 Il Carbonaione shows gorgeous depth, precision and nuance, all of which are quite rare in 2008. Layers of smoke, tar, licorice and beautifully integrated French oak wrap around the deep fruit in its superb, articulated Il Carbonaione. Firm yet elegant tannins support the finish. I will not be surprised if the 2008 merits a higher score in a few yearsandrsquo; time. Il Carbonaione is 100% Sangiovese from an ancient clone native to this part of Chianti Classico called Lamole. The wine is aged in 350 liter French oak barrels, 50% of which are new. As it ages, Il Carbonaione often acquires notes of cedar, spices and sweet herbs that at times recall right-bank Bordeaux. Anticipated maturity: 2018andndash;2028.
