Husic Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2005

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This opens with lovely suggestions of earth, herb, spice and black fruits. The earth element gains fine mineral notes as the fruit takes on a clearer black currant and dried plum note. On entry this is bright with some wood induced sweetneess and a fair amount of power. the mid-palate is fairly red fruited, intensely so with rich currant fruit and lovely wood framing elements of spice and tannin. This is well balanced with a real honest feel and very attractive slight herbal note on the backend that grows on the finish which has good length and a nice focused final with balanced notes of spice and fruit. A fine marriage of power and grace with a classic, lightly minty Cabernet note. Reminds me of some Howell Mountain Cabs. 92pts

On a hillside overlooking Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, in 1997 the Husic Family set out to realize a lifelong dream. Moving endless rocks and sculpting narrow terraces that cling to the mountain’s edge, we planted three small, extremely steep Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyards which peacefully coexist with the region’s wildlife. These rugged, rocky growing conditions, combined with careful farming methods, have yielded a limited amount of magnificent fruit. We are now on our seventh release, offering our 2007 Husic Cabernet Sauvignon and 2008 Husic Vineyards Chardonnay. We are proud to share these beautiful Wines with you. Our wines Julie and Frank Husic purchased their property in 1995. They quickly learned the county was preparing to pass an anti-hillside planting ordinance, and if they wanted to plant vineyards, they would have to do it right away. Jim Barbour of Barbour Vineyards, was hired to help facilitate this process. The permit was granted in 1996 and the vines were planted in 1997. The vineyards were planted on land never lived on before. The ground had to be cleared, dynamited and terraced for planting the three Husic Vineyards, totaling approximately nine acres. These vineyards can never be duplicated. The Husic Family is very grateful for the beautiful land they live on, and the incredible grapes produced by their three, small, rocky, steep vineyards. The Husic vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with a tiny amount of Petit Verdot for blending. The vineyards go from approximately 900 feet on the hillside, to the Valley Floor. Some of the vineyards are planted in the “official boundary” of the Stags Leap District, and the remaining vineyards lie above the “line” of the appellation. It took four years to reach a mature crop, so the first year harvested and crushed by Julie and Frank was in the fall of 2001. Husic Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Palm Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon, and Husic Vineyards Chardonnay are the three wines produced by Husic Vineyards. Both Cabernet Sauvignons are produced from the three Husic Vineyards….all estate fruit. The difference between the Husic Cab and the Palm Terrace Cab are simply barrels and blending. Both wines’ grapes come from the same estate vineyards and have the same winemaker. The Chardonnay grapes, starting in 2008, are purchased from the steep, hillside Los Chamizal Vineyard, above the town of Sonoma. Deep inky color, with a restrained nose of moss, bramble and forest floor. Beautifully balanced, with rich black fruits. Fresh and lively, but with a great tannic core and a strong structure. Touch of licorice on the finish

Frank Husic explained that this wine comes from land never used before, cut into the hillside at a 45-degree slope, which is now illegal. It sits right next to Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Fay Vineyard. This cab has great depth, complexity and balance. It will continue to evolve well. Very full bodied wine. -Tasted at Marché Bacchus 2/27/10

Very dark purple.Aroma of dark fruits with some cherry and black currents and a hint of damp forest floor. On the palate very juicy with lots of dark fruits and some spiceyness. Tannins were definitely there but were approachable. A nice long finish. This is a big and bold cabernet even after 1 hour decant.

Smooth, rich, flavorful with a nice touch of spice that goes a long way. Starts of nice and sweet, but other flavors come into play with fruitiness and nice peppery quality. Finish is long and almost coats the tongue, but rather than an aftertaste, it's a nice smooth flavor that makes you long for another sip.

This fine wine displays elegant raspberry and dark chocolate aromas, with notes of baking spices, cedar and warm toasty vanilla providing complexity. The palate is rich and satiny, with dark red fruits (dark cherries and plums) displaying a bright sweet character throughout the finish.
