Hunter Hill Vineyard & Winery Hunter's Blend 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Vineyard Notes: Hunter Hill Vineyard and Winery located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, is a family winery producing award winning red wines. Successful viticulture on his property and a love of fine red wines inspired Vann Slatter, winemaker, to develop his unique style of approachable, carefully crafted wines. Having selected growers who follow the same practices in the field and his diligence from the crush to the bottle has enabled him to produce quality wines every time! Winemaker Tasting Notes: It is a blend of Estate Merlot, Estate Cab Franc and a touch of Roussanne. True to the Santa Cruz Mountains, it has big fruit and lots of spice. Pair this wine with pastas and salads, will hold up to spicy dishes and be great with dessert as well. Return to Hunter Hill Wine List

Located in an appellation known for world-class wines, this lovely property has been home to our family for over a hundred years. High in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Soquel, the vineyards enjoy sunny days, moderate nights and a long, cool growing season. Grapes ripen gently here and develop a depth of flavor that is distinctive to meticulous dry farming. Hunter Hill wines are clean, fruity and finished. Through each step of the process, from hand pruning the grape clusters through delicate fermentation and graceful aging on American and French Oak, the wines of Hunter Hill are nurtured by an expert craftsman. Our winemaker, Vann Slatter, follows a simple guiding principle: great wines are easy to make with well-loved, beautiful fruit. It is a philosophy that has brought a sophisticated audience and top-tier acclaim to Hunter Hill. Our 2002 Syrah beat out wines from 600 California wineries to receive the prestigious Golden Bear - a unanimous selection as California's Best Wine in 2005. Most recently, our 2006 Estate Pinot Noir and 2005 Estate Merlot were honored with Silver and Bronze medals at the 2008 SF Chronicle Wine Competition. Visit the Hunter Hill tasting room and sample our remarkable Estate varietals. We invite you to stand at the redwood bar overlooking the forests of Nisene Marks, or take a seat by the fountain and enjoy a quiet view of the vineyards. You'll enjoy the experience. The winery is open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays 11AM - 4PM. Private tastings for groups can be arranged by appointment. Salut! Read less

Now here is something completely different, at least in these parts: a blend of Bordeaux varieties with a bit of beauteous Roussanne thrown in: not your typical combo, but you know, hunters will wipe their knife against a pair of fine wool trousers, or leather chaps, or perhaps even silk long johns. You make do with what you have handy. Winemaker Van Slatter likes playing around with this particular blend: the recipe is technically a secret, so the formula is approximate. Regardless, it’s a popular concoction at the Hunter Hill winery, and cases off it fly out the door on release days like ducks heading for a rice field at harvest time. Or maybe more like Canadian geese heading for a golf course near you, if you are unfortunate enough to live on the east coast. The nose is dry and peppery, giving away its Merlot core. Flavors are pretty lean, with a good dollop of acid and tannin. It’s a fairly simple wine that has some nice prosciutto accents along with hints of shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Its simple, but straightforward structure makes it a versatile quaffer that would work with pepperoni or eggplant pizza just as nicely as it would with boar sausage and cabbage, or perhaps even duck confit. This is the kind of blend that doubtless some clever French winemakers have created for their own personal use, but wish they could legally bottle and sell. Ah, the freedom of the New World: it’s a beautiful thing! And what a great price. It can’t be beat.(Alc: 14%, Retail: $15)
