Hundsleiten Gruner Veltliner 2005/ There is some wood here, particularly to smell, but it forms a seasoning for the intense concentrated flavors. Mandarin oranges and some smoky minerality are mixed in a creamy, rich blend. An impressive wine.

Hundsleiten Gruner Veltliner 2006/ Delivers a combination of smoky, toasted nut piquancy and herbal, lemon zest pungency. Faintly bitter peach kernel, cherry pit, pistachio, pear, and toasted almond mingle with herbal infusions, mineral dustiness, salinity, and perfume, leading to a complex layer of flavors and a long, intriguing but at the same time generously refreshing finish. This is an outstanding candidate for enjoying anytime over the next 8-10 years.

Hundsleiten Grüner Veltliner 2010 - 93 points, Wine Enthusiast/ Rich, smooth and opulent wine from the top Hundsleiten vineyard. It is driven by a taut line of acidity that is surrounded by ripe pear and melon flavors and a rounded, concentrated texture. Fruit is right to the fore in a refined way, and pepper on the finish.

Roman Pfaffl has stood at the helm of his family’s acclaimed Austrian wine estate for over 30 years. During this time Roman, together with his wife and children, has focused on crafting impeccable wines that reflect authentic Austrian terroir through their depth, minerality and balance. The family’s dedication to quality has earned Weingut R&A Pfaffl a reputation as the leading winery in Weinviertel, Austria’s largest and best-known wine region. The estate produces fine wines from 75 hectares of vineyards in 10 villages throughout the Weinviertel. Production Area Hundsleiten is located on the Bisambergkette- a mountain range at the gate to Vienna – the same latitude as Burgundy. The soil is “flysch” which is an alternating succession of clay and sandstone, interspersed with Quartz which make it a classic vineyard for growing Grüner Veltliner. Hundsleiten means “difficult work here,” in German, due to the steep slopes of the vineyard. The 30+ year-old vines, however, reward this additional work with especially rich and complex wines. Grape Varieties 100% Grüner Veltliner Vinification The grapes are hand harvested at the end of October. Grapes are destemmed the must stands approximately 8 hours before being pressed by a pneumatic press with low pressure. Fermentation takes place in big wooden barrels. The wine is stored for 5-6 months in 20% stainless steel tank, 80% in large wooden barrels before being bottling. Color Sparkling golden-yellow Bouquet Explicit black pepper, pineapple, spice Taste Pepper, minerality, pineapple, creamy Alcohol 13% Serving Suggestions A versatile food wine, this pairs well with veal, soups, beef, ragout, potato dishes, and cheeses.

Hundsleiten Gruner Veltliner 2007 - 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast / The Hundsleiten vineyard is on the last slopes of the Weinviertel looking across the Danube Valley. With its great exposure, it produces a rich style of Grüner, with added structure and minerality. In 2007, the vintage exposed the terroir, giving a flinty edge to the still-rich character.

Hundsleiten Gruner Veltliner 2008/ A bold Grüner Veltliner, with spice and minerality to go with the rich fruit. There is a steely edge that suggests the wine needs a year’s aging to bring on greater richness. Big and impressive.

Hundsleiten Weinviertel 2010 - 90 points & Year’s Best Austrian Wines, Wine & Spirits/ From a densely planted , 31-year-old vineyard of clay layered with sandstone and quartz, this is a big boned grüner veltliner. The rich, mango-ripe fruit moves into a savory realm as it evolves on the palate, ending with a cleansing lime pith note and white pepper spice.
