Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006

Member Review by enophiliac:

Jayson Woodbridge does it again and again. If you look at his critical acclaim since the release of the 2000 Hundred Acre Kayli...no one has taken a faster ascent to the top of the mountain. Uncompromising maybe the biggest tell tale sign of JW's unwitting demand for excellence for his wines. Tasted from the barrel, although unfinished 01 HA KM gave me shivers like a cool breeze went through the cave; it was almost a sympathetic nervous system response to next to sensory over load. Sweet and supple with spices combinations tough to express, it's one of the only wines I've tasted where I was at a complete loss for words. Why think when you can try something that good?

Hundred Acre is a Napa cult winery based in Rutherford in California. The wines are produced by Jayson Woodbridge with winemaker Philippe Melka. These highly sought-after wines are available through the winery’s (extensive) mailing list, with precious few of these small production wines via retail and auction. With prices starting well into the hundred dollar range, the winery specializes in 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with names like Precious and Deep Time. More recently, they began producing a Zinfandel (Dark Matter) and the Gold, an unoaked blend of Chardonnay, Viognier and Gewürztraminer that contains tiny gold flecks in the bottle. Woodbridge is also involved in the far more accessible Layer Cake brand.  Read less

Last night I had dinner with a high powered friend of mine (he is the President of Hilton Hotels) at A5A Steak House in San Francisco. My friend Joe has the opportunity to drink the greatest wines from around the world on a regular basis. We opened up a bottle of Kayli Morgan 2001 Deep Time which is a special lot that stays in the barrel over a year longer than the regular Kayli Morgan. Joe said and agreed that it was the single best bottle of wine he has ever had in his life. It's like Kayli Morgan on steroids. Deep rich layered flavors with a finish a long as a marathon. Wish I had more in my cellar, but that was the last bottle. By the way, the restaurant was great too. Especially enjoyed the lobster tempura appetizer and the fillet of buffalo.

More tannin and earthiness are apparent in the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Ark Vineyard. Last year, this wine revealed considerable softness, but that has morphed into a more delineated, beautifully dense, full-bodied Cabernet with dazzling fragrance and glycerin in addition to an extravagant fruit character. It, too, should drink beautifully for 20 years.

A deliciously complex, enticing style, with layers of creamy currant, mocha, black cherry and blackberry fruit that glides across the palate. Full red-ruby. Fragrant, nuanced nose combines redcurrant, raspberry, plum, tobacco, mocha and baking spices. Sweet and velvety but with succulent acids giving the wine terrific vinosity. Wonderfully sweet, structured and long, and highly aromatic on... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon continues to evolve beautifully, revealing a deep purple color as well as a beautiful nose of classic creme de cassis intermixed with hints of pencil shavings, licorice, toast, and cedar. Voluptuously textured and full-bodied, with tremendous purity and a concentrated finish, it should age effortlessly for 10-15 years.
