Huia Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

88 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): Bright pale yellow. Slightly high-toned aromas of marzipan and honey suggest an element of noble rot; some floral and tropical fruit notes emerged with air. Then quite different in the mouth, with citrus and mineral flavors framed by ripe, brisk acidity, giving the wine a slightly tart quality. I was surprised by the disconnect between the wine's nose and palate. But plenty of intensity here. (Sep 2012)

The Huia was a unique New Zealand bird from the wattlebird family. The pair co-existed as a team in the dense forest canopy. Before the arrival of Europeans it was already a rare bird, confined to the Ruahine, Tararua, Rimutaka and Kaimanawa mountain ranges in the south east of the North Island. It is the only bird in the world in which the bills of the male and female birds are different in shape and size. This unique feature along with the bird beautiful plumage generated great interest from international collectors. The tail feathers were highly prized by Maori and Europeans alike. The last official sighting of the Huia was in 1907, however there are unconfirmed reports of their bird song being heard in the isolated bush of Ureweras 30 years ago. New Zealand owned, Marlborough wine company Huia Vineyards is owned and operated by Mike and Claire Allan who were drawn to Marlborough by the intense fruit flavours found in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, other Marlborough white wines and Marlborough Pinot Noir. In 1990 the first Huia vineyard was bought and the planting started soon after. In 1996 Mike and Claire established the Huia wine company, Huia Vineyards Ltd as a family owned wine company committed to the production of premium and classical Marlborough wines. The Huia vineyards and winery are focused on hand crafting fine unique wines expressing the richness of Marlborough grapes from the vineyard through to the table. Read less

Nutty and toasty on the nose with roasted apple fruit topped with nuanced floral and herbal spice notes. Lean but with good richness and fine balance. Focused flavors show a little hickory nut on top of the apple and yellow fruit flavors. Finishes with finesse and tension if toasty, and a touch roasted fruit. 88pts
