Huia Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2008
Winemaker's Notes:
The Sauvignon Blanc 2008 was harvested from six different vineyards, spread over the Wairau Valley. These vineyards sites have been selected and developed over the years to provide a range of varietal characters from within the valley. Harvest commenced early on the 19th of March and continued through the 3rd April. There was excellent depth of flavour and structure across all blocks and harvest was completed before any adverse weather. The majority of grapes were harvested in the cold early hours of the morning to retain fruit intensity and freshness. This wine shows a good aromatic intensity with bright herbaceous notes, gooseberry and ripe citrus. It is layered with flavours ranging from passionfruit, melon and pineapple to lemon zest. This uplifting Sauvignon shows an excellent length and depth on the palate. Huia Sauvignon Blanc is delicious with: fresh oysters, prawns, scallops, mussels cooked in Sauvignon Blanc, marinated fish with dill, goat, sheep and feta cheeses.

The Huia was a unique New Zealand bird from the wattlebird family. The pair co-existed as a team in the dense forest canopy. Before the arrival of Europeans it was already a rare bird, confined to the Ruahine, Tararua, Rimutaka and Kaimanawa mountain ranges in the south east of the North Island.

It is the only bird in the world in which the bills of the male and female birds are different in shape and size.
This unique feature along with the bird beautiful plumage generated great interest from international collectors. The tail feathers were highly prized by Maori and Europeans alike. The last official sighting of the Huia was in 1907, however there are unconfirmed reports of their bird song being heard in the isolated bush of Ureweras 30 years ago.

This Sauv Blanc featured a nose of cream, grass, and leaves. In the mouth has a nice glycerin sheen, medium to light body, some earth, and peach and nectarine flavors. Finish falls off quick with a toast and oak taste. Balanced. Not sure about the other reviews' fruit break-down, seems like one review relates to the 2006 vintage maybe?

Gooseberry, tropical fruit, and lime notes abound in this textbook New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. A classic wine calls for a classic pairing, so try it with shellfish for a phenomenal experience.
