Alsace : a climate blessed by the gods Thanks to its privileged geographical situation, Alsace is the driest wine region in France. Its micro-climate is caused by the distance which separates it from maritime influences, and by the protection of the Vosges mountains. This climate enables the grapes to ripen slowly to full maturity, giving the wine great finesse of aroma and unequalled intensity. A mosaic of soils Because of its complex geology, Alsace has an infinite multitude of combined soil types. Centuries of experience have taught the winegrowers how best to match each vine variety to each type of soil. Riquewihr : the most noble wines of all the country From the Middle Ages, Riquewihr was renowned for "the most noble wines of all the country". The Hugel family’s vineyard estates cover more than 25 hectares, exclusively in Riquewihr, and almost half of which are in the Grand Cru zone. No use of fertiliser, low yields, vines averaging thirty years of age, thinning out of excess bunches, and picking always by hand, are all factors which contribute to rigorously high levels of quality. The finest vineyards of the region In addition to its own estates, the Hugel family purchases grapes and grapes alone, from growers under long-term contract, farming more than 100 hectares. Thanks to the skill of their growers, a dozen of the best villages of Alsace thereby contribute to the quality of "Hugel" wines. Their grapes are also always picked by hand, and according to a pre-arranged timetable. Read less

This is quite perfumed with an early blast of white pepper on the nose followed by layers of floral, honeyed and exotic fruit notes that show hints of guava and lychee. Exhibiting lovely balance in the mouth, this seems light and bright on entry before the richness of fruit makes itself known on the mid-palate. Lovely depth of flavor with a hint of coconut milk accents the under-ripe apricot fruit of the mid-palate. More spicy flavors return on the moderately long finish. There’s a nice edge of sweetness here though this is quite dry. 92pts

The nose was highly expressive with peach, Lemon curd, almond skins, yellow flowers and sweet cream. On the palate, it was soft and rich yet juicy with flavors of apricot, citrus and orange rind. The finish was remarkably long with citrus-tinged inner floral notes.

Cheers for Hugel's 2005 Jubilee wines ! The Hugel family, renowned worldwide for their long experience of producing textbook late-harvest VT and SGN wines, can also be justly proud of the quality of their top level in the traditional dry wine category. Jubilee wines represent the ultimate of what the association of grape variety and terroir can achieve in terms of elegance, with a unique personality and character. Visually, the wine is bright with serious depth and intensity. Predominant pale green reflections reveal its youth and promising future. The bouquet is expressive, rich and intense, a wide aromatic spread of fruit and flowers: acacia blossom, molene, lime blossom, privet, citron, white peach, with a subtle touch of minerality that is elegant and still reserved. On the palate, the tactile nature of the attack and structure induces an ecstatic gustatory sensation of great class that can only be given by a distinguished, proud Riesling, with its elegantly tense backbone of perfectly ripe acidity that has not yet reached the stage of over-ripeness. It is well-structured, juicy and almost luscious. A great wine that will age for 10 to 15 years, attaining the wonderfully mineral character of white truffle and gun flint that may surprise the neophyte, but which the connoisseur of great Rieslings will always look for after 5 to 10 years in bottle.

The classic grape of Alsace. At once delicate and vital, its intense fruit is given great length by a backbone of crisp acidity producing some of the world’s greatest and long-lasting wines. Tasting notes: Beautiful in color with a hint of green on the edge, this wine needs a few more months to reveal its potential and will age gracefully another few years. The nose is developed and shows a hint of mineral flavor associated with good ripeness and acidity and a lingering clean and dry finish. It is ready to drink now but has the potential to age another five years. Food pairing: An ideal accompaniment to traditional Alsace-style dishes such as goose and pork. Riesling is one of very few wines to be able to match sushi or sushi-styled foods.
