Hugel et Fils Pinot Gris Alsace Aoc Hugel 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

"Hugel Tradition" wines are made partly from the best grapes purchased from winegrowers under long-term contract, in a dozen of the most favoured localities in and around Riquewihr. Depending on the vintage, they include an important amount of grapes from the Hugel estate. The colour is very young but nonetheless quite deep, silky and supple in appearance. This Pinot Gris is an attractive pale yellow colour, with nice depth, still young. The expressive, fruit-driven bouquet is already quite open, a fresh and elegant palette of very ripe fruit aromas, apricot, greengage, a hint of honey and liquorice, remarkably well-balanced and tempting. On the palate, the harmony, structure and balance are exemplary. Just dry enough to offset a lively, perky freshness, it is soft and tender yet not heavy, with a long, elegant finish. This is a classic, textbook Alsace Pinot Gris, well-made, authentic, a great success. It is too good not to enjoy already, but it can be aged ; it will be perfect in 4 or 5 years. Serve at 8°C with fish, shellfish, lobster, crayfish, white meat, veal, pork, poultry and game birds.

Alsace : a climate blessed by the gods Thanks to its privileged geographical situation, Alsace is the driest wine region in France. Its micro-climate is caused by the distance which separates it from maritime influences, and by the protection of the Vosges mountains. This climate enables the grapes to ripen slowly to full maturity, giving the wine great finesse of aroma and unequalled intensity. A mosaic of soils Because of its complex geology, Alsace has an infinite multitude of combined soil types. Centuries of experience have taught the winegrowers how best to match each vine variety to each type of soil. Riquewihr : the most noble wines of all the country From the Middle Ages, Riquewihr was renowned for "the most noble wines of all the country". The Hugel family’s vineyard estates cover more than 25 hectares, exclusively in Riquewihr, and almost half of which are in the Grand Cru zone. No use of fertiliser, low yields, vines averaging thirty years of age, thinning out of excess bunches, and picking always by hand, are all factors which contribute to rigorously high levels of quality. The finest vineyards of the region In addition to its own estates, the Hugel family purchases grapes and grapes alone, from growers under long-term contract, farming more than 100 hectares. Thanks to the skill of their growers, a dozen of the best villages of Alsace thereby contribute to the quality of "Hugel" wines. Their grapes are also always picked by hand, and according to a pre-arranged timetable. Read less

I paired this with seared wasabi tuna steaks hot off the grill. Dry with a nice hit of acid. Very tasty with a greenish hue to the color.

Tasting Notes: The colour is pale pistachio green with straw yellow hints, young, bright and lively. It has a nice, fresh bouquet, non-aggressive, very floral, jasmine, hawthorn, lime blossom and frangipane, with smoky, woodland hints, moss, fern, chanterelle and cep mushrooms. On the palate it is dry in character, with just enough acidity, a nice structure and balance, still a little closed on the finish but it will open out and become more expressive in the next 6 to 12 months, although its youthful fragrance is already pleasantly refreshing. Enjoy in 2 to 6 years with sea or river fish, eel, red mullet, crayfish, and white meat like veal and poultry.
