Eggs are always tricky to match with a wine but the Hugel Pinot Blanc 2006 had just the right edge of acidity to keep all in check. By itself the wine was less than stellar; with the food an excellent foil.

This is an easy drinking wine, perfect for a hot summer day or with guests who are not 'into' wine. Pours a pale straw color, crystal clear. Moderate amounts of peaches, pears and honeysuckle flavors. Starts off very light with some peaches. In the middle there are some honeysuckle tones and some pears. Finishes just like the middle. This is a light bodied wine with decent acidity for its age. Probably should have been drunk a few years ago. Nothing overly complex, but does the job.

Aromatic, with orange peel, grapefruit, sea salt and smoke notes. Shows good acidity for the vintage, with a lightly honeyed finish. Drink now. 4,000 cases imported. -AN

Winemaker's Notes:

Classic "Hugel" wines are made exclusively from grapes purchased from winegrowers under long-term contract, in a dozen of the most favoured localities around Riquewihr. This wine revives an ancient Alsace tradition that wines assembled from noble grape varieties were called "Gentil". The Pinot Blanc is an attractive pale yellow colour, complemented by bright young green hints. Already quite open and expressive, the bouquet of ripe fruit - golden delicious apple, mirabelle, molene - is soft and harmonious. The wine has a dry and refreshing character, yet it is also soft, supple and velvety. This is a fine example of Alsace Pinot Blanc, a variety often underestimated, yet which at this level of quality represents extraordinary value for money. Enjoy it at 10°C now or within 2 years, but keep a few bottles for 5 or 6 years and you will be agreeably surprised. Serve with sea or river fish, poached, steamed or smoked, or with asparagus, or with poultry and white meat in light, creamy sauce.
