Huber Dornfelder Sta. Rita Hills 2007

Member Review by EMark:

Very attractive dark purple in the glass. Nose makes me think "sweet wine," but I know I'm not going to get that. Some green wood scent. Fairly light on the tongue. No fruit flavors to speak of. Slight tannin around the edge of the tongue. Second taste does give some fruit suggestions--some plum, some cherry. I think this is a wine that will go with food (although I would like a tad more acid) because it is fairly neutral and will not compete with anything. US$24.99 at Total Wine

The Huber Estate was established in 1986, and the first vines were planted in 1987, making it one of the oldest vineyards in Santa Rita Hills. The premier grapes of the appellation, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, are grown on the estate, as is the much sought after German red grape varietal called Dornfelder. Since the first harvest, grapes from the vineyard have been purchased by select premier winemakers throughout the valley. The first wines under the Huber label debuted with the 2000 vintage. Proprietors Norman and Traudl Huber are dedicated to growing grapes of flavor and quality and crafting wines of distinction. All Huber wines are handcrafted in small lots to ensure the highest quality expression of the estate vineyard and the Sta. Rita Hills area. Sta. Rita Hills is a small appellation encompassing just 100 square miles. The cool climate, ocean breezes, coastal fog and the incredible soils of the Sta. Rita Hills area all come together to create the perfect climate for growing exceptional winegrapes that then become the award winning Huber Cellars wines. Of course, the personal commitment to excellence by the talented winegrower Norm Huber, who directly manages the vineyard, must not be underestimated or forgotten. His dedication to quality in every area from soil to grape to finished product ensures that Huber Cellars wines will continue to be a favorite of wine connoisseurs worldwide.
