Deep and dark on the nose with notes of treebark, earth, white pepper, mushroom, smoldering wood, subtle dried herbs, a hint of rust and slightly medicinal RC cola like notes over a bed of dried cherry/dried strawberry fruit. Another Claret styled wine but decidedly tougher and more powerful than the Neyers with a core of kirsch like cherry /bitter cherry fruit. Huge but not a fruit bomb by any stretch of the imagination with a seamless, rich very tight core of dark, mocha tinged, dried peach, apple and raisin fruit with a little baking spice and some medicinal licorice and menthol tones, a touch of char lurking on the backend. Tremendously chocolatey and beef jerky like on the long finish with a touch of pepper and vanilla. 90pts
Deep, dark and gamy on the nose with notes of fresh, moist earth, tobacco, fudge, dried cherry and balsamic, redwood tones. Very focused and just a little tight on entry with plenty of alcohol, but little heat, and rich, concentrated, earthy fruit that powers through the mid-palate and into the mint tinged powerful finish with dark, almost medicinal, chiseled fruit tones that linger on the finale. This is wonderfully balanced if in an austere and structured style for Zin but I bet this will reward further aging and it makes for some pretty compelling drinking already. 91pts.

Interesting pepper and floral on the nose, the mouth is very acidic and doesn't give much else, aside from some oak.
A cacophony of buzzing hot berries on the nose. Huge sweet medicinal spice and pepper in the mouth. A very interesting mix of huge fruit and huge spice but they seem to be competing for me attention.
I had it at a blind wine tasting. The descriptions sounded great, but I thought it fell kind of flat. I guessed it was the cheapest of the bunch. For me, not worth it at this price.
Less fruit than other Howell wines. Smooth finish with light tannin
Candied fruit, vanilla and clove on the nose belie what follows. Loads of black pepper, black tea and tar flavors finish with lots of pithy wood. Too expensive at $40.
Spicy and acidic on the nose. Full-bodied with a long pepper tart finish.

A rich, lusty Zin, filled with wild berry and spice flavors, with a touch of raisins. No surprise that itrsquo;s a little prickly hot, because the alcohol is way high, but thatrsquo;s just fine with barbecue.
This is a blend of zin from 95-year-old vines at the Beatty Ranch with fruit from mature vines from Black Sears as well as Ballentine on the valley floor. Its feisty blackberry scents meet the black, volcanic stone tannins of Howell Mountain zin. The contrast feels wild in the middle, softer and elegant in the end, where it leaves the impression of a rich claret. A substantial, earthy zin for a porterhouse steak.

Fruit from these vineyards has been sourced by Dunn Vineyards, Cornerstone, Turley, Duckhorn and Elyse Winemaker, Jack Stuart, is a UC Davis grad and former president of the Napa Valley Vintners Association The wine itself is a brilliant medium ruby. Ripe, meaty and dark, it is the most intense Old Vine in years. Scents of cherry, spiced plum and clarified butter are supported by a deeper core of jammy fruit. On the palate, the wine is rich and concentrated, with chocolate and chestnut flavors and a long, smooth textured finish. Its wonderful now, but will continue to gain complexity in the bottle.
