Good medium red. Aromatic nose combines redcurrant, plum and tobacco. Sweet, supple and moderately dense, with good definition and lift to the flavors of dark berries, plum and chocolate. 93 points - Wine Spectator"Beautifully focused and elegant yet complex, showing vivid black cherry and toasty vanilla aromas, with richly layered currant, herb and spice flavors that finish with ripe but firm tannins. Drink now through 2014." (Insider 01/09)91 points - Robert Parker"Readers looking for a soft, richly fruity, mocha and coffee-infused wine with oodles of berry fruit should check out the 2006 Merlot Blue Line. This wine is hedonistic and luscious, with plenty of Merlot typicity, medium to full body, and a soft, silky-textured finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. The well-known Bob Foley has been the consistent force behind these high quality wines from Hourglass. Their top wine comes from a gently sloping vineyard near Napas Lodi Lane. They have now added another group of wines under the Blue Line designation which exhibit considerable promise, although the production figures are relatively low, about 350-500 cases of each of the Blue Line offerings." (12/08) 91 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar"Good medium red. Aromatic nose combines redcurrant, plum and tobacco. Sweet, supple and moderately dense, with good definition and lift to the flavors of dark berries, plum and chocolate. A rather lush merlot that finishes nicely persistent, with substantial sweet, melting tannins. The first release under this label." (May/June '09)

The name of the Hourglass vineyard comes from its location at the pinch of Napa Valley’s unique hourglass shape. It draws cooling breezes both from the south and west, allowing owner Jeff Smith and his team (most notably famed winemaker Bob Foley, of Pride Mountain, Switchback Ridge and Robert Foley Wines) to pick when the grapes are perfectly ripe. The tiny, concentrated berries are the kind of raw materials that winemakers everywhere dream of working with. The same team that has produced the sublime cabernet sauvignon has created this lusterous merlot. Rich, dark and smokey, it is fabulous in a glass on its own, but could take on any slab of meat thrown its way. Hourglass wines have received some off-the chart scores from the likes of Robert Parker, James Laube, and the feverish bidding at Auctions like the one in Napa Valley for his wares - also a good barometer of quality.
