Lawer Family Wines USD 28.00 750ml

Hooker Wines Syrah Knights Valley Home Pitch Lawer Vineyard 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemaker Scott Harvey aged this wine for 18 months in French Oak, producing a complex, highly structured Syrah in the classic style. The wine has a bright blackberry nose, turning to vanilla bean toastiness with French Oak showing through on the palate, then deftly maneuvering to a finish of rich pecan pie. The winery recommends pairing this with braised lamb shanks.

Unlike monolithic brick and mortar operations, Hooker Wines are the product of a virtual winery that produces vintage blends from the finest California appellations available on the market today. Hooker Wines' 106 acre estate is nestled in its own private valley, located about five miles northwest of Calistoga in Napa Valley. The 20 acre vineyard is currently producing ultra premium Syrah, and next year's harvest will also include Viognier and Cabernet Franc. Several acres of Zinfandel are also planned for premium vineyard designate Zinfandels. But our vineyard is just a small part of the Hooker Winery. The operation itself is actually a virtual winery located on the open market wherever California's finest appellations are available. With the exception of Hooker's Home Pitch Syrah, the various wines blended for the Hooker brand are personally reviewed for superior quality and painstakingly selected for balance and synergy. In short, the Hooker Winery invests time, energy and expertise in cultivating relationships and harvesting the best available wines to ensure consistent quality and exceptional value. The goal is to find right varietals from the finest appellations to create the perfect blends for Loose Ruck Red, Blind Side Zin, Tight Head White and Home Pitch Syrah. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Ripe and peppery on the nose with cocoa tones and a woodsy underlay to the dark, jammy fruit. There are notes of tootsie roll, shoe polish , and raw wood adding some complexity. This has a bit too much acid sticking out giving the wine a sharp edge, and while the tannins are nicely judged the wine is out of kilter. The acids give the dried strawberry fruits an odd brightness. The finish is a bit sharp with a vitamin note of hard acidity. A nice boysenberry finale help to redeem the wine somewhat but it is accompanied by a bit of heat as well. 83pts

so deep purple it looks australian. fullbodied, slightly bubbly from either my backwash or some in bottle secondary ferment. some nice big chunky tannins and medium acid. big american oak statement up front with some tart fruit rollup and black pepper hiding behind. big wine overall - no surprise this wine is successful at wine competitions (where subtle wines battle a judge's palate fatigue).

Lovely deep tar and earth aromas. Palate has a good range of fruit, has a bit of sweetness, well balanced acidity, earth, leather, tar and a smoky chocolate finish.

The nose is unhinged, some smoke and blueberries. Lots of oak influences, solid tannins, some tobacco on the finish, which is long. For a wine this big, it should be more fun.

Big dark blackberries and blueberries. Absolutely huge in the mouth with lots of blackberries, leather, and oak. Moderate acidity. Huge tannins. Nice wine.

From the Beverage Testing Institute World Wine Championships: 85 Points. Silver Medal. Bright violet color. Aromas of mulberries, India ink, and cracked white peppercorns follow through on a silky entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with baked apple, sautéed pepper, cedar, and spice notes. Finishes with a chewy, powdery tannin fade. (tasted on Jun-01-2009)
