Hooker Wines Syrah Knights Valley Home Pitch Lawer Vineyard 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemaker Scott Harvey aged this wine for almost two years in French Oak, producing a complex, highly structured Syrah in the classic style. The wine has a bright blackberry nose, turning to vanilla bean toastiness with French Oak showing through on the palate, then deftly maneuvering to a finish of rich pecan pie. The winery recommends pairing this with grilled marinated flank steak and rosemary potatoes.

Unlike monolithic brick and mortar operations, Hooker Wines are the product of a virtual winery that produces vintage blends from the finest California appellations available on the market today. Hooker Wines' 106 acre estate is nestled in its own private valley, located about five miles northwest of Calistoga in Napa Valley. The 20 acre vineyard is currently producing ultra premium Syrah, and next year's harvest will also include Viognier and Cabernet Franc. Several acres of Zinfandel are also planned for premium vineyard designate Zinfandels. But our vineyard is just a small part of the Hooker Winery. The operation itself is actually a virtual winery located on the open market wherever California's finest appellations are available. With the exception of Hooker's Home Pitch Syrah, the various wines blended for the Hooker brand are personally reviewed for superior quality and painstakingly selected for balance and synergy. In short, the Hooker Winery invests time, energy and expertise in cultivating relationships and harvesting the best available wines to ensure consistent quality and exceptional value. The goal is to find right varietals from the finest appellations to create the perfect blends for Loose Ruck Red, Blind Side Zin, Tight Head White and Home Pitch Syrah. Read less

It's Sweet and modern smelling with lots of boysenberry fruit, and moderately intense mocha-like and vanilla oak spice but it also has a touch of game and dirt with hints of leather and tobacco lurking. Very smooth an entry with good acidity and nice balance to the medium full body, with tannins apparent but in check. The alcohol shows a touch on the finish but the wine is clean and fresh with a bit of dark earthy, bitter cocoa framing the blackberry fruit. Pretty fresh finish with redder fruit and a fleeting touch of spearmint then a finale of coffee, toast, light oak, and a hint of grilled meat. A well done California Syrah. Drink 2009-2014 88pts

A bit of heat on the nose, loads of fruit, very concentrated aromas. The palate is much more austere, strong, confident and raw, with rough acidic fruit on the finish. I don't think this wine would be for everybody, but I do enjoy the sharp angles and acidic bite played against the dark, oily black olive, oak leather flavors. Tannins are a bit flabby. Interesting wine.

The aroma is a bit like powdered chicken stock, smoky, agar, subtle attack and long release, rich tannins give body, which stays silky smooth.

Big and chewy with a well-behaved amount of spice. Extremely well balanced with some complexity in the middle. Really like this.

Cherry, acetone and menthol on the nose. Very rich and full of dense overripe fruit - banana, cherry, plum, figs. The finish is a little chemical, and there's some licorice which is offputting. Its a big wine, spicy and fruity, but not endowed with a lot of structure.

Tasting Notes:

Deep violet color. Aromas of caramelized strawberries, pecan brittle, and creme Anglaise follow through on a round, silky entry to a ripe, juicy medium-to-full body with tangy, tangerine, and green apple notes. Finishes with a long, fruity earth accented fade with supple tannins.
