Lawer Family Wines USD 30.00 750ml

Hooker Old Boys Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

A powerful red wine, with rich layers of savory blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum. The well-balanced complexity of the fruit leads to a refined toastiness, punctuated by a lingering finish worthy of the time and effort that went into the creation of this full-flavored, full-bodied gent of a wine. The winery recommends pairing this with stuffed veal chops.

Betsy and David Lawer, owners of Lawer Family Wines, have a true passion for wine. Their goal wasn’t just to sell their wine, but it was also to make wine that they could enjoy and take pride in creating. The Lawers bought the vineyard, a small plot located five miles northwest of Calistoga in Napa Valley, in 2002, but it required a lot of work. Thankfully, they found John Pina, their vineyard manager who was able to bring the land back to life. Lawer Family Wines produces several brands of wine, including Duck Shack, Three Coins, and Hooker. Each of these brands has a history, and the names aren’t just pulled from thin air. Three Coins, for example, was named after the work that Betsy used to do for her father, a gold miner. Thanks to Larry Levin, the winemaker for all three brands, Lawer Family Wines has been very successful at transforming the Syrah, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, and Zinfandel grapes into award-winning wines. Not only is the vineyard used to produce those grapes, but it is also used to make delicious apples. The land that the Lawers worked on was originally an apple orchard, and even with the growth and success of the vineyard, they have kept many of the trees for their own enjoyment. Read less

Tootsie roll aromas and a mellow palate of blackberries, ripe cherries and tight acidity. At the price point I might look elsewhere, but it's not a bad wine, the high point being the finish.

The nose is somewhat mild, but has very pleasing notes of plum, kind of powdery, with cardamom. Dark fruits and roast pork on the mouth. Pretty well balanced, I like the notes of butteriness. Expecting it to be bolder, but it stays kind of quiet.

Peppery earthy nose supported by a plum backbone. Where's the fruit? In the mouth it exhibits nice spice, tea flavors, and big tannins and a peppery finish but to me there's a huge gap where the fruit should be.

From the Beverage Testing Institute World Wine Championships: 86 points. Silver Medal. Aromas of vanilla wafer cookie, current jam and mincemeat pie follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with menthol, mint, and talc notes. Finishes with a hint of sour cherry, raisin and a chewy tannin fade (tasted on Jun-29-2009)
