Hook and Ladder Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2012

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Fruit forward and not much oak make this an excellent Russian River chardonnay. Citrus, lemon peel and a bit of stone minerality combine with a medium length finish. This is best with a little air time and served not too chilled.

In 1970, San Francisco firefighter Cecil De Loach and his wife Christine staked their claim in the wine grape business by purchasing 24 acres of old-vine Zinfandel in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. In the early seventies, the De Loaches decided to acquire additional vineyard land. For several years they watched others make notable wine from their grapes before making the decision to produce wine under the De Loach label in 1975. More than three decades later, Cecil and Christine sold that label and have continued their winemaking skills at the helm of a small family winery that employs a simple philosophy - craft exceptional wines, from the highest quality grapes, that people love to drink. We consider each step of the winemaking process an opportunity to showcase the distinctive flavors contained within our carefully cultivated grapes. Every bottle of wine is a worthy representation of the best effort from each and every person at Hook and Ladder Vineyards and Winery. On 375 acres situated in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley, our vineyards produce cool climate grapes widely recognized as some of the finest in the world. Grape growers of the early 1900's recognized the sites of our vineyards as being uniquely suited for wine grape growing. Building on their knowledge and experience, we have matched the soil and climate of each parcel with the varietals most likely to achieve its full potential. Tasting Room Our tasting room is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is located on Olivet Road in the heart of Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley. Read less

This was part of a Hook and Ladder food and wine pairing dinner. I could not tell what kind of Chardonnay they were trying to make. A more crisp European style or the buttery creamy Californian? This was not very buttery with a nose of pear. It was smooth but green apple tart. Apparently the oak barrels in which the Chardonnay goes through malo-lactic fermentation gets a little suntanning once in awhile according to Josh although I do not know how much that matters. The pairing highlighted the buttery smoothness of the wine which confirmed it Californian origins. Non-descript fruit aromas with a slight citrus flavor and a little spice.

Wine Tasting NotesThe bright straw to light gold color of the wine announces a beautiful chardonnay nose combining aromas of ripe melon and yellow apple, hints of hay and notes of butterscotch. At fi rst sip a creamy quality emerges followed by a crispness that serves as the platter for the long fl avors of melon, banana, citrus and pure Chardonnay fruit.
