Honig Vineyard and Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc. Plenty of ripe, wild berry and plum aromas and flavors, framed by vanilla, spice, and toasty oak. Lush mid-palate tannins flow into a lengthy finish accented by bright fruit. Drink now through 2024. Barrel aged 18 months in American oak (35% new). Alcohol 14.5%. Not yet reviewed; 2011 vintage rated 93 points by James Suckling: The mineral, blueberry and pine-needle character is cool here. Bark. Full body but reserved and balanced, with fine tannins and a chocolate, berry and blueberry character. Extremely well done for the vintage, with style and panache. I like this better than the 2010 for its reserve and form. Drink or hold.

In 1964, Louis Honig purchased a 68-acre ranch in the heart of the Napa Valley and planted it with Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. For the next few years, Louis sold the grapes to neighboring wineries with the dream of retiring one day from his San Francisco advertising business and making wine from his vineyard in Rutherford. Before he could realize his dream, Louis passed away, leaving the estate to his children and grandchildren. In 1981, as a tribute to his legacy, the family rallied together to produce several hundred cases of Louis Honig Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard's old tractor barn. The wine won a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair, and thus, the winery was born. In 1984, at the age of 22, Louis' grandson, Michael Honig, took over management of the vineyard and winery. With a lot of hard work and a beat up pickup truck, Honig managed to get their Sauvignon Blanc into most fine restaurants in California. From there, production and distribution grew. In 1987, in addition to the Sauvignon Blanc for which they were already known, they began producing small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. Family members Regina Weinstein joined them in 1997 and Steven Honig in 2000. Read less

Tasting Notes: Plenty of ripe, wild berry and plum aromas and flavors, framed by vanilla, spice, and toasty oak. Lush mid-palate tannins flow into a lengthy finish accented by bright fruit. Drink now through 2024. VINTAGE: Textbook conditions saw near-ideal spring bud break, steady flowering, even fruit set, a lengthy stretch of warm days, and cool and often foggy nights during the long summer months. Late and light rains held off until grapes found optimal ripeness, bringing exceptional quality to the crush pad and into the cellar. WINEMAKING: The fruit for this wine comes from both our sustainably farmed vineyard in Rutherford, and from local Napa Valley vineyards. Each vineyard block was harvested and made into an individual lot representing that block. The wines were pressed off the skins from 10 to 20 days after crushing. Blending generally takes place between January and April of the year following harvest. - Winery Blend: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon 4% Cabernet Franc 7% Petit Verdot AGING: Aged for 18 months in American oak barrels (35% new barrels)

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is ruby/purple with notes of plum and blackcurrant with the attractive aromatics followed by a medium-bodied wine. It starts off well and shortens ever so slightly in the finish. This is certainly good, stylish Cabernet Sauvignon, but this is the high end in terms of quality.

On solid footing, with sassy tannins, this offers a core of mocha, blackberry and dark berry flavors that are pure, dense and chewy, accented by tobacco leaf and cigar box notes. Drink now through 2023. 15,355 cases made.
