Honig Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

93% Sauvignon Blanc, 6% Semillon, 1% Muscat. A crisp, fresh Sauvignon Blanc created in the classic Honig style. Peach, lemon grass, hints of jasmine and pea shoot are balanced by grapefruit and lime. Medium bodied, with a bright, lingering finish. Enjoyable with many foods including curries, roasted fish and a wide variety of cheeses. Not yet reviewed; 2012 vintage rated 91 points by The Tasting Panel: A blend of 97% Sauvignon Blanc, 2% Semillon and 1% Muscat, this zings with fresh cucumber, kiwi and juist-juiced red grapefruit. Delicious and mineral-light refreshingly clean--I have retained fond palate memory of this from tasting it weeks ago. Aged on light lees and 10% in neutral oak tanks with 90% in stainless steel tanks.

In 1964, Louis Honig purchased a 68-acre ranch in the heart of the Napa Valley and planted it with Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. For the next few years, Louis sold the grapes to neighboring wineries with the dream of retiring one day from his San Francisco advertising business and making wine from his vineyard in Rutherford. Before he could realize his dream, Louis passed away, leaving the estate to his children and grandchildren. In 1981, as a tribute to his legacy, the family rallied together to produce several hundred cases of Louis Honig Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard's old tractor barn. The wine won a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair, and thus, the winery was born. In 1984, at the age of 22, Louis' grandson, Michael Honig, took over management of the vineyard and winery. With a lot of hard work and a beat up pickup truck, Honig managed to get their Sauvignon Blanc into most fine restaurants in California. From there, production and distribution grew. In 1987, in addition to the Sauvignon Blanc for which they were already known, they began producing small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. Family members Regina Weinstein joined them in 1997 and Steven Honig in 2000. Read less

Tasting Notes: A crisp, fresh Sauvignon Blanc created in the classic Honig style. Peach, lemon grass, hints of jasmine and pea shoot are balanced by grapefruit and lime. Medium bodied, with a bright, lingering finish. Enjoyable with many foods including curries, roasted fish and a wide variety of cheeses. It is a perfect comple ment to relaxing on the porch with family and friends. Winemaking: The Sauvignon blanc grapes are treated using two different methods. To enhance the delicate tropical fruit flavors, a portion of the fruit goes directly into the press as whole clusters. The remaining fruit is de-stemmed and left in contact with the skins for several hours before pressing, amplifying the grapefruit/citrus components. All of the juice is fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks using a variety of yeast strains selected to bring out the aroma and flavor profiles of Sauvignon Blanc. Aging: Aged on light lees 10% in neutral oak tanks (the oak tanks help develop mid-palate texture without adding any oak flavor) 90% in stainless steel tanks Varietal Composition: 93% Sauvignon Blanc 6% Semillon 1% Muscat

Flowery and electric in high-toned grapefruit and peach, this is a crisp, clean white from a consistent producer. Medium-bodied, it holds small percentages of Sémillon and Muscat. The finely hewed texture benefits from 10% of the wine having been aged in neutral oak.

This white offers lip-smacking acidity to accentuate the crisp lemon, Key lime pie and ruby grapefruit flavors at its core. Smooth and refreshing, accented by floral and honeysuckle details. Drink now.
