In 1964, Louis Honig purchased a 68-acre ranch in the heart of the Napa Valley and planted it with Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. For the next few years, Louis sold the grapes to neighboring wineries with the dream of retiring one day from his San Francisco advertising business and making wine from his vineyard in Rutherford. Before he could realize his dream, Louis passed away, leaving the estate to his children and grandchildren. In 1981, as a tribute to his legacy, the family rallied together to produce several hundred cases of Louis Honig Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard's old tractor barn. The wine won a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair, and thus, the winery was born. In 1984, at the age of 22, Louis' grandson, Michael Honig, took over management of the vineyard and winery. With a lot of hard work and a beat up pickup truck, Honig managed to get their Sauvignon Blanc into most fine restaurants in California. From there, production and distribution grew. In 1987, in addition to the Sauvignon Blanc for which they were already known, they began producing small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. Family members Regina Weinstein joined them in 1997 and Steven Honig in 2000. Read less

A smooth, round wine with simple flavors of cling peach and fresher apple. The full feel and light finish make this easy with crab salad or chicken roasted with bacon.

Honig produced 20,000 cases of 2002 Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp, fig, melon-filled white with an attractive fragrance, light to medium body, and an easy-going personality. Moreover, it is fairly priced. Drink it over the next year.

You might play off the floral, jasmine tea scents of this sauvignon, matching its rich, white-peach plavors to a crab soup or shellfish stew. Or you could pick up on the earthier elements with pâté. Even with its lovely plumpness of texture and lasting buzz, there's a rasp to this sauvignon (is it white Rutherford dist?), an earthiness that will grow more intriguing with time.

Consistently one of the finest Sauvignons made in California, Honig's 2008 (30,000 cases produced) is a blend of 99% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Semillon from prime Napa Valley real estate. It exhibits crisp fig and melon notes intermixed with hints of beeswax and crushed rocks. Drink this medium-bodied, stylish, attractive white over the next year.

Fragrant, with perfumed notes to the pea blossom, passion fruit and gooseberry flavors, which are lively and spicy, with good intensity and an almond skin finish. Drink now.

Intense yet delicate, with a medley of lime skin, grapefruit, grass and cedar flavors underscored by pretty floral notes and a burst of green pear and fig. Drink now through 2006.

Very pale color. Pure aromas of white grapefruit, passion fruit, grass and ginger. Then fat and ripe, with an exotic hint of banana leavened by good dry minerality. Not really herbal but ultimately cool, classic, musky sauvignon that should go well with oysters. Honig began picking their small 2004 sauvignon crop on August 10!
