Honig Vineyard and Winery:

In 1964, Louis Honig purchased a 68-acre ranch in the heart of the Napa Valley and planted it with Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. For the next few years, Louis sold the grapes to neighboring wineries with the dream of retiring one day from his San Francisco advertising business and making wine from his vineyard in Rutherford. Before he could realize his dream, Louis passed away, leaving the estate to his children and grandchildren. In 1981, as a tribute to his legacy, the family rallied together to produce several hundred cases of Louis Honig Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard's old tractor barn. The wine won a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair, and thus, the winery was born. In 1984, at the age of 22, Louis' grandson, Michael Honig, took over management of the vineyard and winery. With a lot of hard work and a beat up pickup truck, Honig managed to get their Sauvignon Blanc into most fine restaurants in California. From there, production and distribution grew. In 1987, in addition to the Sauvignon Blanc for which they were already known, they began producing small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. Mild to medium blackberry perfume nose. Smoke, cocoa, currant, soil, raspberry, and dark fruit on the mid palate. Low key, satisfying finish with active but not overpowering tannins. This really came together after about an hour in the glass. 90-91 point napa cab, and at this price point that's pretty good value.

This wine exceeded my expectations. I found it truly a wine to savor... all the descriptions of raspberry or cherry or what have you disappear when you really have the wine in your nose and mouth. All I can say is wonderful1

Marked by herb, dill, cedar, sage and dried currant flavors. Full-bodied and well-structured, both supple and tight at points, showing its subtle tannic strength on the finish. Drink now through 2017. 15,000 cases made. -JL It lacks the charm of what is clearly a better vintage, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (at $30 less a bottle, that's worth noting). A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2007 is a winner. It is a luscious, sweetly tannic, classic Napa Cabernet offering notes of white chocolate, black currants and spice box, and a medium-bodied, supple, sexy style. Drink it over the next 7-10 years. A pretty good Cab that shows plenty of richness. May lack a bit in nuance, but on the other hand, a little cellaring could benefit. As currently constructed, it's rich and forward in berry-cherry fruit and oak, with lots of spices, and tastes a bit jammy-sweet. Honig's single-vineyard Cabs always seem much better than their generic Napa Valley. S.H.

Somehow Honig's well-made, organic Napa wines have managed to stay under the radar, but this Cabernet is certainly worth discovering: it has a deep, ruby-red color and a complex bouquet. On the palate, we got flavors of black cherry, cocoa, spice, and green tea. This is aged for 20 months in American oak barrels, only 30% of which are new. Well-balanced and well-structured.
