Hollywood & Vine Cellars 2480 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Notes: The 2014 growing season in Napa Valley was one of mostly moderate temperatures and below-normal rainfall, giving our vines a thirst from budbreak through until harvest. The grapes ripened relatively slowly under a moderate September that saw few hot afternoons. Harvested entirely by hand between October 3 and October 6, the vineyards used in this Cabernet combine the plush, fruit-forward notes from St. Helena with the grace and complexity of Rutherford and the bright natural acidity of Oakville bench locations. “Great Cabernets show complexity in both aromas and flavors, and an unmistakable sense of terroir. This 100% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon offers lovely notes of deep dark cassis, cherries baked into a toasted wheat crust, warm blackberries still on the vine. At entry, the wine shows soft, broad, silky tannins and a brightness from the natural fruit acidity, all framed in a structure that shows a touch of French oak and a firm core that suggests considerable age-worthiness.” - Celia Welch

When you hear the words “Hollywood and Vine," the famous intersection in Los Angeles might come to mind, but for us, the name represents the partnership between friends and a mutual love of wine. Actor turned director and screenwriter, Doug Barr, relocated to the Napa Valley from Hollywood, in the early 1990’s. Inspired to try his hand at the wine business, Doug called his longtime pal, Bruce Orosz, and together, they created Hollywood and Vine Cellars. Recruiting one of the most talented winemakers in the valley, Celia Welch, H & V released it’s first vintage in 1998 to glowing reviews. Read less

The 2013 vintage has been heralded as one of the best in Napa Valley history, and this wine seems entirely consistent with that assessment. On the nose, lovely notes of fully ripe cherries and cranberries, raspberries still on the vine, fresh sweet earth and a touch of sweet pipe tobacco rise from the glass. Dark, savory hillside-fruit notes add depth and complexity. On the palate, the black cherry notes dominate the entry, introducing a solid core at the mid-palate with plenty of grip. Crisp fresh fruit flavors and a bright acidity linger through a surprisingly silky finish. - Celia Welch

Vintage: 2012 12/07/2015

The vineyards for this Cabernet were each harvested by hand between October 9 and October 23, 2012. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon combines fruit from vineyards located in Saint Helena, Rutherford and Oakville, as well as Spring Mountain District and Mt. Veeder. The result is an exceedingly complex wine which shows attributes both of benchland vineyards as well as hillsides. After two vintages of cooler weather and smaller crops, Napa Valley rebounded in 2012 with a slightly larger-than-normal harvest of delicious wine grapes which enjoyed a long, warm season of abundant sunshine. The soft, juicy raspberry and blackberry notes from the benchland sites combine very nicely with the firmer, more mocha/tobacco dark notes of the hillsides. This wine has the intensity to age beautifully, but a softer, more readily-approachable tannin structure that makes the wine delicious to enjoy at release. - Winery

Vintage: 2011 11/04/2014

In cooler vintages, the opportunity to create a wine with extraordinary complexity arises, and 2011 provided just such a situation. Cherry pie and cedar aromas intertwine with cooler notes of fresh mint and earthy bay leaf. Darker fruit notes of smokey black tea, roasted pecans, and toasty oak provide depth and complexity to the lighter fruit notes. On the palate, the wine shows flavors that echo the aromas in a structure that is both firm and accessible. This wine has enough fruit intensity and structure to age easily for 10 years or more, but is absolutely enjoyable now. - Celia WelchThe fruit for this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested between October 18 and Nov 1, from vineyards in Oakville, Rutherford, Mt. Veeder, Spring Mountain District and Saint Helena AVAs in the Napa Valley. The grape clusters were selectively hand-harvested, then each cluster was again inspected for perfection.

Vintage: 2009 01/18/2013

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon 2480 is big, full-bodied and boisterous. Black fruit, mocha, licorice and spices are some of many notes that emerge from the glass. There is plenty of depth and richness in this full-bodied but eccentric Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 needs a few years to settle down, as the tannins are a bit rough around the edges at this stage. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. (15.2% alcohol; from Spring Mountain and Mount Veeder fruit): Good full ruby. Aromas of dark berries, dark chocolate and menthol. Sweet, lush and large-scaled, with a slightly aggressive quality to the primary mountain berry flavors. This big boy finishes with a boatload of tannins and a chocolatey quality. This rich, completely ripe Cabernet shows a wealth of complexity from the blend of vineyards that created it. The aromas abound with blackberry, dark chocolate-covered cherries, a touch of anise, and a hint of vanilla/caramel. Its mountain origins (Spring Mountain an...

This rich, completely ripe Cabernet shows a wealth of complexity from the blend of vineyards that created it. The aromas abound with blackberry, dark chocolate-covered cherries, a touch of anise, and a hint of vanilla/caramel. Its mountain origins (Spring Mountain and Mount Veeder) lend structural density to the mid-palate, while the benchland vineyards of Oakville and Saint Helena give a fresh-berry juicy quality to the finish. - Winery

Vintage: 2008 11/14/2013

Good full ruby. Brooding dark aromas and flavors of black and blue fruits licorice and lead pencil. More powerful in the mid-palate than the 2007 but with a creamy texture and noteworthy sweetness and lift. Finishes with firm but ripe tannins a note of bitter chocolate and excellent life and length. This may ultimately be more refined than the 2007. Stephen Tanzers IWC.
