Hogue Genesis Meritage 2012

External Review:

Meritage wines must be Bordeaux blends; otherwise, they can be all over the map. This is an all-purpose, affordable red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Black cherry and olive, smoke and some noticeable alcohol (14.4% is credited) define a sturdy red in wide distribution.

49% Merlot, 44% Cab. Sauv., 6% Malbec, 1% Cab. Franc. Jammy and bit smoky scent. Flavors of cedar and cherry. Creamy smooth with a slight tangy finish.

Tangy, with a peppery edge to the modest currant and herb flavors. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Drink now.

With scents of plum compote and violets, this merlot-cabernet blend is dark and inky at the outset. After a day it takes on merlot's more red-fruited inflections. It has the build and concentration for aging, and at this price, it's worth buying a case to enjoy over the course of the next few years.
