Hogue Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Wahluke Slope Reserve 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoky and a bit of sapwood and eucalyptus greets the nose with a touch of leather and candied black currant fruit and a top misting of sweet vanilla. This is soft and supple in the mouth with a fine backbone of nervy tannins trying to support a rather rich and intense mouthful of slightly herbal, hard candied black currant and black raspberry fruit. The acidity perks up a bit on the backend but this is a rather heavy and dense wine with a short finish and persistent, inky, chocolaty tannins. This is styled to be easy drinking with nice fruit flavors but in the end it is ponderous. 83pts

Hogue Cellars:
THE HOGUE CELLARS™, founded in 1982 by Mike and Gary Hogue, is located in Eastern Washington's Columbia Valley, the premiere grape growing region of the state. The climate and soils of the Columbia Valley produce grapes with intense fruit flavors and high natural acidity. The wines have a liveliness and ripe, zesty fruit flavors that make them ideal complements to a wide range of food.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Blackberries on the nose with a little bit of heat. Very subtle body which I wasn't expecting. Nice and smooth on the finish with some subtle tannins. Wishing I could pair it with a grilled steak right about now ;)

Subtle. Simple. Not very complex. Nice color. Opaqueish garnet. Medium bodied. Smooth tannins. Subtle blackberry and earth. Heavy oak on the finish. Not too fruit forward, which is something I really like about Washington reds. I do wish it were a little deeper and more complex. Pleasant Washington state cab. It's not knocking my socks off, but I'm not disappointed either. I'd buy it again when I'm in the mood for a simple, earthy, straight-forward cab that is budget friendly. $7 well spent.

Plums on the nose. Very soft mouthfeel, tastes like cherry, plums, and dark berries, with a nice surprise of vanilla on the finish. Very pleasant and a good value.

A rich, plummy merlot with blueberry and black plum scents, this is elegant, a match for roast beef. Itrsquo;s a steal at this price from Hogue, which routinely provides excellent bang for the buck with its reds.

Firm, tannic and earthy, this budget-priced Cabernet mixes grapes from three different AVAs mdash; Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Valley and Wahluke Slope. Though there are some sharp, green tannins, this juice shows no green bean or asparagus character, and there are some interesting highlights of anise and graphite.

This vibrant red offers black cherry and herb flavors on a sleek frame. Drink now.

Continuing on a path of steady improvement, Hoguersquo;s value-priced, high-volume Cabernet shows sappy grape and purple fruits, both in aroma and flavor, with blueberries dominant. Tangy acid, smooth tannins and a supple, medium-weight midpalate make this a solid choice for hearty meals.

Bright and flavorful. A juicy, focused mouthful of raspberry-tinged currant and spice flavors, finishing with a velvety texture. Drink now through 2011.
