Highfield Estate Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Intense and very citrussy on the nose with almost a hint of creaminess. This is spicy on the nose with some grass, passion fruit and a little guava exoticism. Fine tension on entry with citrussy, integrated acids, clarity from dryness and cut green fruit. Really very fine, delicate texture and acid zest with a hint of minerality that washes the finish. 90pts

Colour: Pale straw. Aroma: Bursting with tropical aromas of passionfruit and nectarine. Also displaying hints of nettle, tomato leaf, broom and herbal notes. Palate: A luscious palate showing an abundance of grapefruit, peach and fresh minerality. Well balanced with crisp acidity and a delightfully long finish.

Colour: Pale Straw.Aroma: Pungent aromas of gooseberry, freshly cut grass, nettle and hints of tropical fruit. There is underlying sweatiness backed up with minerality and fresh herb characters.Palate: Copious amounts of grapefruit adds to the complex fruitful palate. The wine is weighty and well balanced with a long elegant finish. - WineryWinery Notes:Established in 1989, Highfield is a boutique Marlborough winery making ultra-premium food friendly wines for restaurants and fine wine stores.Purchased by Shin Yokoi and Tom Tenuwera in 1991, Highfield had previously been owned by a family who'd farmed the land since 1935. From the outset, Shin and Tom have had high aspirations for Highfield, establishing an international brand associated with quality the world over.Talented Kiwi winemaker, Alistair Soper makes Highfield's classic Marlborough wines using only free run juice; the rest is de-classified. With some of the best Pinot Noir grapes coming from the five acre block that surrounds the estate, the remaining grapes are contracted off local grape growers from Omaka Valley, Brancott Valley, Dillions Point and throughout the Wairau Valley.

The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc presents a very grassy and bell pepper-laced nose with underlying lemon juice and gooseberry hints. Light-bodied, intensely flavored and quite tart in the mouth, it finishes long and vegetal. Drink it now to 2015. We found this Sauvignon Blanc to be a real treat. It's intense in all the right ways: great acidity, lovely ripeness, and rich in both texture and minerality. Also, unlike so many of its New Zealand counterparts, the aromatics are restrained, showing pretty citrus and herbal notes.
