Hewitson is one of my favorite Barossa wineries for French-inspired, classic, intensely flavorful as well as elegant wines aged primarily in French oak. The 2002 Shiraz The Mad Hatter is knock-out stuff, exhibiting superb intensity as well as an inky/ruby/purple color and a fabulous perfume of melted licorice, crandegrave;me de cassis, blackberries, flowers, and minerals. A great attack followed by an even more powerful, concentrated mid-palate and finish result in a multidimensional, complex Shiraz that can be drunk now, or cellared for 10andndash;12+ years.

Firm, with pure blueberry and blackberry fruit up front, picking up earthy, cedary notes as the finish lingers against fine tannins. Best from 2007 through 2015.

Deep red. Tangy and fresh on the nose, which features cinnamon-tinged raspberry and cherry cola and an exotic suggestion of orange peel. Elegant and suave, with tangy red berry and pomegranate flavors and a lively minerality.
