Hess Su' Skol Chardonnay 2005

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Complex aromatics lead to a core of juicy apple, pear and citrus flavors, turning elegant and refined, persisting on a long, complex aftertaste. Wonderful, and a good price.

This smoky, oaky-styled Chardonnay possesses buttery, apple-like fruit, a notion of roasted nuts, medium body, and a quick finish. It is a straightforward, mouthfilling, savory wine for drinking over the next year.

Hard to beat at this price and score, this tightly wound, flinty young Chardonnay should only get better in the next year or two, so stock up.

Offers a mix of dusty, cedary oak and ripe tropical fruit that's full-bodied, intense and balanced, ending with subtle nutmeg notes. Drink now through 2011.

Shows distinct cool-climate acidity framing streamlined flavors of pineapples, lemons and limes, minerals and spices. It's an elegantly structured, clean wine that will satisfy Chardonnay lovers.

Grapes for this wine come from Hess' Suscol Vineyard located in the southern part of Napa Valley, near the Napa city limits. Winemaker David Guffey combines a selection of seven rootstocks and nine clones of Chardonnay to come up with this bottling, which blends richness and refreshing acidity. The wine was aged 33 percent in new French oak, along with 1- and 2-year-old barrels.

This wine is a perfect example of a Chardonnay that gets better with age. The single vineyard is located on an ancient sea bed with sandy clay and sandstone soils that yield small grapes with intense fruit and citrus flavors and vibrant acidity. Beautifully balanced with pineapple and apricot fruits and a hint of French oak, this wine is wonderfully complex and medium-bodied. Enjoy this wine with pan-seared sea bass or halibut with a mango salsa.
