Food Pairings for Hermitage M Sorrel
I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/31538 for £25.Hermitage is one of the most prestigious appellations in the Rhone valley having once been favoured by Louis XIV and the Russian tsars. It takes its name from a chapel or hermitage built in 1224 by a crusader knight called Caspar de Sterimberg on a hill above the town of Tain by the Rhone river about 40 miles south of the city of Lyon. The Hermitage AOC consists of the slopes of this hill while the larger but less prestigious appellation of Croze-Hermitage is at the base of the hill closer to thje town of Tain. The grape variety for red Hermitage is predominantly syrah although up to 15% of the white grapes marsanne and roussanne are allowed in a blend.Marc Sorrel [ www.marcsorrel.fr ] is a family wine business going back to the 1920's that is renowned for being very traditional even to the extent of still using horses.I drank my bottle on Easter Sunday with a meal of bacon and mushroom stew and I enjoyed it greatly thinking it a superb wine. There is some fairly intense and concentrated blackcurrant and licorice style fruit there and it has more than a hint of pepper and spice but on the other hand it manages to be very smooth and easy-drinking.This is definitely a quality product and I have given it top marks
The classic wine is made from 25 year old vines in the Greffieux andBessards communes and is aged for 22 months; at the elegant end of theHermitage scale, which still implies, of course, power and a firm, disciplinedtannic structure. Simon Field M.W. - Rhône Buyer
