Hermann Wiemer 'Dry Reserve' Riesling 2016

Member Review by winesnob1987:

A strong aroma lets one know that the wine has a real flavor and can be paired with a meat. Unfortunately it is very acidic which can hide the true flavor of wine presenting itself more as dull chardonay than a full flavored riesling. Nonetheless it is an enjoyable bottle with some real flavor. I had it with a Mediterranean meat dish stewed in a heavy red sauce. It paired with the meal well, and I enjoyed its bone dry taste even more. Its real downfall is its $20.00 price tag, there are wines just as good for 10-15 a bottle.

Riesling-obsessed connoisseurs know how important Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard's pioneering work is to wine. Hermann, born in Germany with an extensive wine family background, discovered the Finger Lakes in the 1960's, and its cool climate and gravelly soil reminded him of the Mosel Valley. Realizing the untapped potential of the Finger Lakes region, he started to grow classic European vines along selected sites on one of the most prominent properties in the Finger Lakes. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard estate grown wines are established from traditions of excellence and have a reputation for being exceptionally lush, crisp and well balanced. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is founded on the philosophy of quality and hand crafted wines. Located on the shores of Seneca Lake, the well drained sloping shalestone bedrock and Honeoye silt loam soil lend itself to the production of what critics consider to be some of the best grown Rieslings in America. From all three of Wiemer’s estate vineyard sources, there’s an aromatic tension here between brisk citrus accents and the richer scents of saffron and golden apple that provide a seductive depth of flavor. This is a wine that starts rich and broad, and finishes bright and citrusy, with juiciness that drives the wine toward a long finish.

Shows the slightly loose edge of the vintage, but there's very solid range to this, featuring Jonagold apple, heather, papaya, dried pineapple and quince notes, with a flicker of shortbread on the inviting finish. Drink now through 2015.

Ripe and fresh, offering a pure, racy beam of Jonagold apple, honeysuckle, pear and chamomile notes, with a long finish. Drink now through 2014.

At once firm and lively, its peach scents lifted by a tale-like minerality, this wine shows impressive tension between tropical fruit and structure, its creamy midpalate cradled by rippling acidity. Pair with roast ham.
