Hermann J. Wiemer Riesling Dry Magdalena 2008

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

This 24-acre vineyard is one of the warmest sites in the Finger Lakes, providing ideal conditions for nurturing the noble grape of Germany into a classic among the Finger Lakes and other New York cool-climate wine regions. The year's growing season was particularly conducive to fully ripening the clusters and providing the structure and complexity Finger Lake Rieslings strive to achieve. Impressive aromas of citrus and apple engage the palate with rich, deep, fruit-driven flavors of kiwi, peach and mango, and a pervasive degree of complexity and finesse. The stony minerality begs for rich dishes and provides the structure that pairs deliciously with a wide variety of foods. Though they call it "Dry," there is a note of residual sugar present; yet the acids balance the wine and further enhance the nuances of seriousness with pleasure.

Riesling-obsessed connoisseurs know how important Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard's pioneering work is to wine. Hermann, born in Germany with an extensive wine family background, discovered the Finger Lakes in the 1960's, and its cool climate and gravelly soil reminded him of the Mosel Valley. Realizing the untapped potential of the Finger Lakes region, he started to grow classic European vines along selected sites on one of the most prominent properties in the Finger Lakes. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard estate grown wines are established from traditions of excellence and have a reputation for being exceptionally lush, crisp and well balanced. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is founded on the philosophy of quality and hand crafted wines. Very fresh and well-delineated already, with nice cut to the Jonagold apple, honeysuckle, white peach and green almond notes. The long finish lets a quinine note play out while pulling from dry to off-dry and back again. Drink now through 2012.

From its bright floral nose to its soft, sweet finish, there's a gorgeous femininity to this outstanding Riesling. Dry in style but accented by notes of pink grapefruit and lychee, Magdalena's daintiness is kept in check with a bracing acidity and elegant white tea astringency.
