Hermann J. Wiemer Riesling Dry 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

A dry Riesling with a crisp crips minerality and hints of lime and delicate citrus on the nose. Nicely balanced with a touch of honeyed grapefruit on the palate with a clean finish.

Riesling-obsessed connoisseurs know how important Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard's pioneering work is to wine. Hermann, born in Germany with an extensive wine family background, discovered the Finger Lakes in the 1960's, and its cool climate and gravelly soil reminded him of the Mosel Valley. Realizing the untapped potential of the Finger Lakes region, he started to grow classic European vines along selected sites on one of the most prominent properties in the Finger Lakes. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard estate grown wines are established from traditions of excellence and have a reputation for being exceptionally lush, crisp and well balanced. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is founded on the philosophy of quality and hand crafted wines. Located on the shores of Seneca Lake, the well drained sloping shalestone bedrock and Honeoye silt loam soil lend itself to the production of what critics consider to be some of the best grown Rieslings in America. apple, peach and apricot; long and enjoyable finish, like a kanye song that you like in spite of yourself; pretty sweet overall

A favorite for light meats and summertime salads. Crisp, light and fruity, with an off-dry finish, the wine is reminiscent of a halbtrocken Kabinett from Germany's Mosel.

This pleasantly fruity white shows typical Riesling flavors of peach, mineral and light herbs. It's full-bodied yet dry and well balanced.

From tank, the 2005 Riesling Dry looks set to be a winner. Smelling like a honey-laced Normandy cider, it comes onto the palate bright, sappy, and full of appley fruit. It is not the most complex of Rieslings (perhaps with some time?) but is utterly pure and lovely.

This generous Riesling exhibits a subtle cross section of tropical fruits, litchi, passion fruit and peach. The flavors are rich and abundant, ideal for a spicy larb gai. (Thai chicken salad).

Hermann Wiemer produces some of the finest New York state wines I have had the pleasure to encounter. Though labeled "Dry," this Riesling still retains a slight hint of sweetness - enough to highlight the flavors of peach, slate, and citrus, but not enough to turn off the average dry wine drinker. Served alongside blackened catfish or chicken and risotto, this was a big hit at my rehearsal dinner.
