Hermann J. Wiemer Late Harvest Riesling 2011

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

This takes a day to show itself, starting off with a sweet burst of flavor and the lift to carry it. The wine accrues an unexpected concentration over time, the fruit accents more focused in their delivery, like a beam of peach-colored light. It seems to have the stuff to age, so cellar, and see what it can do two to four years down the line.

Hermann, born in Germany with an extensive wine family background, discovered the Finger Lakes in the 1960's, and its cool climate and gravelly soil reminded him of the Mosel Valley. Wiemer Vineyard estate grown wines are established from traditions of excellence and have a reputation for being exceptionally lush, crisp and well balanced. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is founded on the philosophy of quality and hand crafted wines. Features an off-dry edge, with kiwifruit and green melon flavors balanced on a flattering frame. Key lime and meringue notes hang through the friendly finish. Drink now.

Wiemer has created some of the most beautifully well-made Rieslings in the world. I’d put many of their wines up against some of the best known German producers. The Late Harvest Riesling is richer and more full-bodied than their Semi-Dry, with a smooth, round mouthfeel and bold but vibrant white fruit flavors. This wine is gorgeous now, but we’ve had older vintages that have aged magnificently, becoming more honeyed and unfolding greater depth after a few years.
