Hermann Dönnhoff Nahe Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese Goldkap. Versteigerung 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

No other wine, anywhere, exceeds the clarity, polish, complexity and sheer beauty of flavor of this grower’s finest wines. Simply, like the most perfect Riesling that can ever be.

H. Dönnhoff:
A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Dönnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Dönnhoff. The Dönnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. These vineyards are sited in several nearby villages, namely Niederhäuser (Hermannshöhle), Oberhauser (Brucke), Schloßböckelheimer (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube), and Norheimer (Kirschheck and Dellchen). The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties. Read less

This opens with a strong note of waxy fruits, starfruit, tight and unyeildingly mineral with a closed dusty character that allowed hints of gunflint and green onion to slowly emerge. In the mouth this is rich and acidis with great balance but very tight. Packed with fruit and beautifully light in the mouth, the finish reveals peach and apple fruits with notes of bitter almond and maraschino cherry adding complexity. Try and keep your hands off until 2011. 92pts

Fairly sweet, viscous but not too much on the nose. Strong acidity keeps it crisp.
