Herdade Paco Do Conde 2007

Member Review by Drs P:

Great wine! There is a lot of fruit to discover: plum, blueberry, raspberry. Next to it there are earthy tones of leather, liquorice and laurel. The tannins are richt yet smooth. The taste confirms the nose. The wine is off dry. The aftertaste is warming and lingering.

SAEG’s winery is located in Monte Paço do Conde in Baleizão, a small village in Southern Alentejo, Portugal. It has begun its activity in 2002, when the first stage of the construction was concluded. The second stage, finished in 2004, included, beside an upgrade of the capacity to 1.000.000 litres, the installation of a laboratory, a bottling line, aging areas for both barrels and bottles and a pleasant tasting room, where our customers/visitors can visualize cellar work trough a glass wall while tasting our wines. The winery was installed in over 100 years old warehouses witch where recovered, fully respecting the traditional architecture of the region. However, it is equipped with the most recent technology. All equipments in contact with grapes, must or wine are made of stainless steel and/or special alimentary rubber. These materials are perfectly inert and very easy to clean. Alentejo has a very hot summer; it is not uncommon to have temperatures of 35º to 40ºC during the vintage. Being so, temperature control deserved a special attention when the winery was designed. A very effective thermal isolation and cooling systems with an extraordinary capacity assure us that the heat will not harm the quality of our wines. Other issue that deserved an extra care was the protection of the fermented skins during the process of devating. This process is executed using a special peristaltic pump (the most smooth pumping process available) that moves the fermented skins in to a closed cylinder pneumatic press that will perform a soft pressing, protected from oxidation. These modern equipments represent an additional investment but they are, together with the technical capacity of our Wine-Maker Rui Reguinga and the quality of our grapes, one of the fundamental bases of the constant quality that our wines present. WOW, this proves what the critics are saying - "Portugal is the next one to watch in Old World wines". This wine exudes ripe fruit, both on the nose and on palate. The dignified light tannins add to the mouth feel and wonderful lingering flavors.
