Herdade Do Esporão White Blend Vinho Regional Alentejano H.e. Late Harvest 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Perfumed with the intense aroma of gardenias, this sensuous, full-bodied white made from a blend of three native Portuguese varieties is simply FABULOUS. Opulent flavors of peach, passionfruit, and grapefruit get amped up by the wine's creamy, expansive texture in the mouth, which comes from some time spent in neutral oak barrels. A remarkable wine that should not be missed!

In the heart of Alentejo region, 180 Km east of Lisbon, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Herdade do Esporão was aquired by Finagra with the main porpuse of producing wines of great quality. From 1975 until 1979, the Herdade do Esporão was occupied during the revolutionary and agricultural periods. Only after this period Finagra was allowed to proceed the winery project. Our modern cellars were built in 1987. A new stage of Finagra project was acomplished. In 1989 the first wine "Esporão" was considered one of the best Portuguese wines and three years later the brand "Monte Velho" was launched. In 1995, after our brands were considered among the best ones, new investments were made. A new area of vineyard was planted and the existent was completely renovated. A dam with 4.000.000 m3 capacity was built, feeding a drip irrigation system that covers all the vineyard. The purchase of Perdigões Estate, with 180 ha of vineyards, the expansion of the cellar and the construction of the wine tourism complex are some of the most recent investments of this dinamic company developing the "Herdade do Esporão". Complex aroma with notes of orange peel, peach and crystallized fruit. rich, sweet taste of dry fruit and figs. I had this with dessert but it was suggested to accompany blue moldy cheeses and is said to be best with foie gras.

Light gold in color. th enose show's buttery oak with lime and mineral undercurrents. Really well balanced and better as it gets a bit of air into it. In the mouth the oak is a presence but not overbearing, with a creamy mouthfeel overall. Flavors of pineapple, limey citrus, and mixed nuts. This was 6 months in American oak and aged surlie. 3.5/5 [NR]

Pale yellow in color. THe nose shows mead like notes of honey, and minerals. Very sweet with a medium acidity. Flavors are simple of honey and some pineapple. Tasty but very simple wine that is often served as an appretif at the restuarant located at the bodega. 2.5/5 [NR]
