Editorial Reviews for Herdade Do Esporão Rosé Blend Vinho Regional Alentejano Vinha da Defesa
This is quite intensely perfumed with plenty of toasty oak notes. Powerful plum, dried herb and roasted fruit notes handle the oak well and offer up accents of licorice, violets and a hint of chipotle. Nice and fresh on entry, there's not a lot of flesh here and the slightly drying tannins poking out on the mid-palate attest to that. There's plenty of fruit though, with rich wild plum and boysenberry fruit over notes of coffee, chocolate, earth and some subtle black spice. The finish is moderately long and brisk. The tannins show their edges again, but the fruit sticks right with them. A touch rustic perhaps, but a lovely wine that shows off excellent intensity of flavor without much weight. 14.5 percent ABV and frankly not a hint of it. 91pts
delicate, rose and strawberry
a complex, subtle aroma of red berries with balanced notes of American oak. rich flavors of ripe berries. Exeptional just by the glass or with your favorite beef or veal dish. Very food friendly.
A blend of 40% Aragones (aka Tempranillo), 30% Trincadeira (aka Tinta Amarela), and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 1 year in 100% American Oak barrels and an additional 1 year in bottle before release. Bottled unfiltered. Deep purple reddish hue, big nose of bittersweet chocolate, ripe dark fruit such as, black berries, plums, tar, baking spice. This is a full bodied red, medium + alcohol 14.5% abv but not hot, just the right amount of acidity, soft gripping tannins, well balanced and perfectly suited for food, bright intense lip smacking finish. The palate is full of ripe red and black fruit with hints of cocoa and a bit of earthiness towards the end. I would toss this wine towards the new world spectrum but there is a bit of unmistakable old world charm that makes this wine very appealing. I would imagine this wine could stand up to 8-10 years of cellaring and be just fine. 4.5/5
Opened a bottle of this last night and it was delicious, with just the right balance of sweetness and acidity. It had a luscious mouth feel and paired well with everything I ate it with -- an uncommon combination of brie, cucumbers and nuts. It neither overpowered the food nor was overpowered by the food -- rather the cucumber flavors were enhanced after a sip of wine. I'm just sad that the bottle is now empty.
13.5% alcohol Very clean, with a light steely gold color. The nose is fresh with hints of citrus, nuts, vanilla, and light peach. In the mouth it remains fresh with a light creaminess and with an overall medium acidity. Flavors of lime, pear, peach though not very powerful in the mouth. 3/5 [NR]
Purplish red in the glass the nose is black pepper, mint, and minerals all painted on a background of dark fruits. In the mouth it's soft and light with medium tannins and firm acidity. Flavors of Plum, cherry, black pepper, minerals and somewhat tart. 3/5 [NR]
